Timing case studs - 3.4 Mk2

In order to replace the front crankshaft oil seal, I had to remove the timing chain cover.

In order to remove the timing chain cover I had to remove the cylinder head.

This was because there are 2 studs coming down from the head and through the top edge of the cover, secured from below with nuts. Had it not been for theses studs I think the cover could just be pulled of, but not entirely sure.

So I’m wondering whether to replace these studs with bolts or setscrews, so that next time the head won’t have to come off.

Is there anything wrong with this logic ?

Thanks,

Anthony

its possible to get them off by making 2 nuts 3/4 thick, locking them together, and unscrew stud.
afterward, copperslip stud, wind nut on, cut slot with hacksaw, and a screwdriver can be used thereafter

Thanks, Tony. I tried to remove the studs by your method but it didn’t work, they seemed too tight in the head, however I’ve got them out now and I’ll certainly adopt your excellent tip for re-assembly.

Actually it’s as well it didn’t work, as the head gasket was pretty shot anyway, on the verge of failure I’d think, and was allowing an oil leak.
