I think you are missing the 2 screws at the front outer corners. Picture of original panel from 1953 car attached shows where they were. Also the hood cable I think showed below the panel originally.
You are absolutely right on the cable - I must have missed it 
However, I do not see the front outer corner screws on the photo…

Do you have better pictures showing the forward screws you mentioned on the
original panel ?
Click on the picture, then click again and it zooms in.
There are a couple of white arrows pointing to two screw holes.
But they are not at the outer corners, they are more like halfway between the center and outer edges.
This is the best I have right now. I still have the original in CA and can take better pictures later. If my memory is correct, both corners of my original are broken off at the screw holes so they did not show in the photo.
As you can see in the Tadek under dash picture the ends hang down and should be tight against the dash panel. If you examine the aluminum dash panel you should find the original holes.
