[v12-engine] 6.0 litre piston rings

Anyone know a supplier of standard 6.0 litre piston rings? I
am struggling to find some in stock here in the UK.

Although the ring diameters are the same, the later 6.0
litre pistons have narrower ring grooves which means the
thicker 5.3 rings don’t fit.

Comparing a 1985 5.3 piston with a 1994 6.0 litre piston I
measured the following:

5.3 PISTON

Top 1.90mm / 75 thou
Middle 1.90mm / 75 thou
Bottom 3.75mm / 150 thou

6.0 PISTON

Top 1.30mm / 50 thou
Middle 1.30mm / 50 thou
Bottom 2.75mm / 100 thou

Can anyone help please?–

Just a thought, If the only difference is the width of the ring groove, take
the pistons to an engine shop and have them turned wider to fit the 5.3
rings.
Or maybe speak to a good engine rebulding company, they often source rings
based on their dimensions rather than engine make /model…

You can get rings ground down too, although there might be
other differences and it wouldn’t work for the oil ring
probably.
Maybe a combined approach?

Usually thinner rings are also deeper, I believe.

Maybe a combined approach?

Modifying either the rings or the pistons would strike me as insane.
I’d put the old rings back in before I’d do either. New rings for a
6.0 simply cannot be that difficult.

Thanks Chadbourn and to all who responded privately to my
simple question … ‘‘Anyone know a supplier of standard 6.0
litre piston rings?’’

Looks like I will be sorted soon and I can get back to nailing
another of these engines together - thanks again :)–

The rings you are looking for are made by Hastings for a ford 6cyl
engine so you will need two sets.

They are part no. 2M 5107 040

I will post a picture of the box too in my pictures.

Is there a minimum width for Total Seal rings? If the 6.0 uses
narrower rings than the 5.3, might that mean that the grooves are too
narrow for Total Seal rings?

Hello Russ, how many miles have you driven with these piston rings till now? Was everything OK with them?

I had 96,000 miles on the stock cylinders and when I saw the factory honing marks, I decided to re-hone them. These rings now have 38,000 on them with no issues. Good luck! Russ

I found it impossible to get any. Had piston grooves modified to suit standard 5.3 rings. Seems to work.
