[v12-engine] Geared starter motors

Well, the starter on my 77 xjs, is making some ominous noises, sort of a
rattle on hitting the key.
So I was thinking of putting in one of these new fangled geared type starter
motors. Any one had any experience of them? Good or bad?

They are available here in Australia, at about $475 Aus ($300 US) so I could
get it here, or wait till I am in the US and England in Aug and see if I can
pick one up cheaper there. What sort of prices are they over there?

I’ve had one on my V12 E-type for 4 years now. great. lighter, faster,
uses less juice.

for the E, I think they run about $ 250 here in the US

To All:

I have heard other good reports on the Nipponsdenso replacement gear
reduction starters for V12’s at www.britishstarters.com -

I put one in a 1985 XJ6 that had had numerous prior rebuilts…The new
starter turns the motor over fast and sounds good…I think it will last a
long time based on manufacturers reputation…

Best of luck…

Tom

In reply to a message from Andrew Holley sent Mon 9 Jun 2003:

I recently upgraded to a gear reduction starer from
www.britishstarters.com. I paid $200 US for it. I am very happy
with the results. I only had to change the connector on the signal
wire to make it work. I highly recommend this upgrade. I have never
seen one of these japanese starters fail in my 20 years as an auto
technician. Can’t say the same of Lucas or US manufactured ones.

Andrew where in the USA are you visiting? You can reply offline. I
am more than willing to help you arrange to get one while here in
US. let me know.–
