I’m looking to purchase a set of standard size piston rings
for my light engine rebuild. Sleeves are all in good shape.
Trying to decide on which piston rings to buy. XKs Unlimited
stocks the Deves rings ($240/set) but from what gather on
Google, they are much harder to seat and are more suitable
to using new sleeves? No idea if there is any truth to this
so thought of asking you folks.
I’ve used Hastings before and they worked fine. I think they
are about $430/set.

To seat the rings you should lightly hone the sleeves, will
save you a couple of hundred $;s–

I’m not sure where the 800.00 price comes from. I sent one
of my 6.0 pistons to total seal, and they sent me a custom
set of rings for just a little over 400.00. I used Total
seal rings on my last three rebuilds, (two Jag V12s), and
can’t imagine using anything else. It simply amazing to see
how your oil stays so clean after 3-5000 miles. These rings
eliminate blow by, so they HAVE to produce extra power.
Maybe not much, but well worth the money in my opinion.–

Obviously you want the custom set, not the standard set!

I know I swapped a few emails with one of the guys in sales
over ring gland sizes, depth, etc. It was then suggested I
send them a piston and allow them to put together a set of
rings for me. It wasn’t long that I got a set of rings for a
little over 400.00. I don’t know why the 5.3 would be so
much more.
Here is the invoice:

Sent an inquiry to Total Seal. I’m wondering if it makes such a difference the quality of Total Seal (even at 400 USD + shipment to Europe + custom at approx 20%).
in most business , you get what you pay for, cheap means less quality, and R&D engineering!
i have used Total Seal many engines ,never any problems, that i am aware of, NO blowby or lower case pressure build up!
on some engines with low cost rings i have had oil leaks from case pressure buildup, at hi load and RPM use!
Hi Dorin, I went with the basic Deves ring set from XKs. Worked out great. Car makes so much more power than before and hasn’t given me any problems and I really drive it hard. I can break traction on dry tarmac shifting between 2nd and 3rd.
