The needle jumps back and fort, sometimes works fine for a while, than goes
to zero
and when I hit a bump starts working again, that’s the pattern day in day out.
Any suggestions in where to start to look? What to tackle first; the rear end
transducer, wiring, connectors or the instrument it self?

Most likely a broken wire where it exits the transducer. If you are careful,
it can be repaired with a small soldering iron. After you’ve soldered it,
get one of these semi-hardening materials (I forgot the name of the stuff)
to make a decent pig-tail in order to avoid tension on these wires.
Good luck,
Jack Verschuur.
