[v12-engine] V12 Focus Manual

I recently received a photocopied FOCUS manual from a fellow lister (Thank
you, G.G.) that is just absolutely incredible! Apparntly it originated as
part of the literature used by Jaguar technicians.

I’ve never seen a more complete, detailed breakdown of each component in the
overlapping systems of the V12 engine. It is fully illustrated and
diagrammed. Each system is illustrated, each component is photographed and
identified by location, explanation of its function, and diagnostics of each
component is covered. Specifications for everything from spark plug gap to
the temperature-to-resistance ratios for air and coolant sensors are listed.
It is roughly 60 pages in length.

Taken from the introduction: “This FOCUS book is to be used as a source
document for all current XJ-S engine performance related information and
adjustment techniques. These apply to all H.E. and later models with P type
fuel injection.”

While Kirby’s book is certainly indespensable, I consider this an even
better source.

It covers:

 System Description
         Fuel injection
         Fuel injection components
         Ignition
         Ignition components
         Emissions control
         Emissions control components

  Engine setup
         Throttle operating adjustments
         Vacuum verification
         Ignition timing/idle speed
         Fuel flow/fuel pressure
         ECU verification/adjustment

   System analysis
        Performance factors
        Epitest
        Pulse duration
        Fault guide

   Specifications
        Engine setup/performance factors
        Wiring diagrams

I have scanned in the photocopied book I received and converted it into a
.PDF file for everything except the wiring diagrams, which were too large
for my scanner. (After I reduce them on a photocopier, I will scan them in
and append them to the .pdf).

Since this is such a thorough and easy to follow manual, I think it is an
indespensable tool for those wishing to keep yet another XJ-S on the road.
I really want people to have access to the book.

Anyone who would like me to email them the .pdf file, please ask! I’ll send
what I have, and after I add the wiring diagrams, I’ll send you the updated
version as well.

Additionally, the list members who operate websites may choose to make the
.pdf available to others via their site.

Sincerely,
-jt

I would like to thank JT for a copy of this manual, it gives best
techincal info I have ever seen in a manual, and clear simple
instructions on how to check things for each bit out our V12
engines.

Don’t ask a question on the forum without it first looking through
a copy of this manual, 99% of your engine related question will be
answered straight away, with drawings, and explanations of how each
bit of the engine works, and how you can tell if it is working
properly. If you can’t fix your V12 with the help of this
manual…go buy a Chevy.

For those of you who have not asked for a copy of this manual, what
of you waiting.

Thnaks again JT, great find–

To all… Joe sent me a copy also. I’m not a competent diagnostian, but I sold a 91 VDP to a ASE mechanic who is elated with the car and excited about my 94 XJ12… will work(and teach me) for weekend lunches and beers. I currnently have a very difficult starting problem and will report our success with this info as we go. Hopefully the manual will be of assistance for the 6.0L.

Dean,

Thanks for giving some web space to this important document. Joseph
graciously tried to send the file to me several times, but my
mailbox was just too small. Now that it’s on the web, all I had to
do was download it, and am printing a hardcopy as I type this.

Aha, so it’s a Jaguar publication…
#S-58 ‘‘XJS ENGINE PERFORMANCE’’

The guy that’s selling it also has the following:
#S-91 ‘‘AJ6 4.0L ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM / OBDI DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE’’
#S-64 ‘‘XJS COUPE AND CONVERTIBLE BODY ENHANCEMENT’’

Too bad that these and similar publications aren’t bundled on
JDHT CDROMS…–

Hi Guys,
I am new on this forum. I joined because I am looking to purchase a Jag V12 5.3 HE engine to recondition and rebuild (with a couple of extra ponies) . This has been on my mind for years and I have not been able to get past it so I am finally going to do it. Even though I am from an engineering background (Naval Architect/Marine Engineer since 1993) I will still need help in ensuring I end up with a great engine. To that end can someone please send me the FOCUS manual? The link from 2004 does not work. Is there any other Jag V12 engine manual out there that can help me with the engine build?
Many thanks and wishing you all a very happy and healthy 2017!

I’d love to see this but I get 404 not found using IE, Chrome and FireFox. Is this link broken?

Thanks,
Steve
