[v12-engine] Water pump - Sandwich gasket

I’m trying to fix a small leak at the inner waterpump gasket
by replacing it. Pump is out and impellor off but ROM
says ‘‘tap the pump body out of the sandwich plate’’ and warns
on no account to prise the two apart! Can anyone assist with
where/how to ‘‘tap’’ ??? I have identified the two ring dowels
but I’m not sure if I can drive them out without opening the
pump/sandwich plate first.
Hopefully someone has been here before and succeeded in
swapping this gasket over… any assistance
appreciated.
Thanks, Mike (1973 DDS)–

You don’t want to pry simply because the aluminum pieces are rather flimsy
and you don’t want to distort them. Once all the bolts are out (including one
flush head Pozidriv screw on some models), it should come apart fairly
easily, just the old gasket dressing holding it together.

That said, I’d be willing to bet money your leak isn’t the gasket but rather the
shaft seal. There’s a weep hole out the bottom where any leakage past the
shaft seal comes out. Of course, I presume you’ll be replacing the bearing
and shaft seal while you’re in there anyway? And using a goretex gasket
with no gasket dressing during reassembly?

Thanks for the feedback. I have now extracted two ring
dowels using a caphead screw and a socket to generate the
extraction force (They come out in the ‘‘towards the block’’
direction). They are heavily splined and will need a press
to refit when I’m fitting the impellor again. I suspect this
is the original pump (1973). ROM says this gasket should be
fitted dry (?)but the gasket supplied in my engine rebuild
set seems a flimsy low quality paper type.
I am not familiar with Goretex gaskets - should they be
assembled without any hylomar or similar dressing ???

Thanks again, Mike (1973 DDS)–

I don’t understand any of this. Why are you extracting dowels? And what
dowels are you extracting?

Ford updated the gaskets for the Jaguar V12 to goretex sandwich gaskets, a
thin layer of sheet metal with a goretex (teflon) coating on both sides. They
are supposed to be assembled dry. Too many suppliers seem content to
stock the earlier cheap paper gaskets which should NOT be assembled dry,
a light coating of Hylomar is in order. Whether or not you’re going to insist
on the goretex gaskets or willing to simply reassemble with the paper is up to
you. You see how much fun you’re having with this job.
