Very late '68 E engine

A parts engine ( a rusted solid engine left outside for 30+ years) showed up at the shop to strip usable parts and then discard. The odd thing is the number. It’s 7E18393 . That seems like an unusually high number. I only remember seeing the high 17,000’s. Does anyone know what the last '68 engine number is before they went to series 2 with the 7R series?

Phil,

There are 2 S1.5 cars in xkedata.com with higher engine numbers than 7E18393; namely 7E18705-9 and 7E18904-9. There are several pages of cars with engines in the 7E18xxx range.

And for whatever reason the 2+2 cars had much higher numbers 7E55xxx

It seems that the engine and trans numbers didn’t use a logical order.
