[x-type] Looking to purchase X Type

I have started looking for an X type sedan or wagon as a ski
car and I was wondering what the years and problems are to
watch out for. I currently drive an XK8, but it is hard to
mount a ski rack on the convertible top. Also, do the back
seats fold down on the sedan?–

Grahame:

The X-Types are wonderful cars, underrated by everyone who does not own one!
(or 3, in my case). Problems: the 2002 and 2003 models has an issue with the
automatic gearbox -solved in later versions. This problem was not a “Jaguar”
problem - the same JATCO 506E unit was used in VW, SEAT, Mazda, Land
Rover…and they all had the same issue. Many of the transmissions were
replaced under warranty. The transfer case for the AWD should have the fluid
changed and MUST have the cooling air duct fitted - this piece often goes
missing and may be the root cause of problems here - and this holds for any
model year.
The seats do fold down IF the car has that feature (an obvious statement) -
on the early cars (2002 and 2003) this was an option in Canada.

Apart from these two things there are no year-related issues, but a
2004-onwards car is best. The wagon (in Canada always called the Sportwagon)
was introduced for the 2004 model year with the Sport interior, suspension
and dechroming. Not popular. For 2005 and beyond the wagon for Canada is
trimmed identically to the sedan - much more satisfactory since the X-Type
is a stiff car anyway - the handling is really excellent in all of them (I
speak as the owner of a 2005 wagon and of two manual shift [sweet] sedans).
A well serviced X-Type is a superb car.

Your name, please.

I recently purchased an X type 2002 with about 60K miles.

I had some issues with mine, aux belt broke,
starter pinion not making contact so installed a new starter.

A coolant leak developed on the bottom rear hose,
difficult to fix.

rear brake pads lost all the retainers.

You MUST, MUST check the condition of the lower A pillars.
They rust from the inside out and that affects the
structural integrity of the car. This is a fatal flaw in X
Types.–

I own a Lynx Eventer Shooting brake and have been interested in the X type wagon.
Given they weren’t imported into Australia there are only 4-5 in the country anyway a car that I missed out on last year came back on the market so I am the proud owner of a 3 litre V6 wagon/estate.
Originally UK delivered it has some interesting extras such as heated screen, heated seats, possibly automatic wipers and maybe other items really need to learn more about them.
The car was sold new in Herts march 2005.
The original radio has been replaced and looking at trying to get an original and an original fitment GPS system and parking sensor on rear bumper.
Love to make contact with anyone who really knows there X Estates
