[x300] 2001 X308 Need To Replace Windshield

I now have a cracked windshield. I have an appointment for Monday
with a local firm to replacement it. Any special precautions or
insight that you fellow members can provide? I’m particularly
concerned regarding the mirror.

Thanks in advance.

I have been driving with a cracked windshield for over a year now
with the same concerns. My crack started as a small pip and has
spreaded across to about 12 inches. I’m concerned about a tight
seal after the new windshield is put in and also concerned how they
will handle the mirror. I’ve asked my repair shop for
recommendations, but they mainly any good windshield repair place
should be okay. I’ll be interested in your experience.

I took my 98 VDP in to a windshield shop for replacement. In less than a
hour it was done, however, I had to wait another hour for the adhesive to
dry before I could drive the car. The mirror was not an issue with them.
They even offered to change it in my garage if I wanted to wait till the
Mobil truck was free.

I replaced the windsheild about 18 months ago and again six months
later. The second one was due to a stone from a big rig while on a
free way. I was sick… and pissed. I have since stopped driving
too close to them. Yes, it has stone guards on the rear tires. So
much for how they work.

But, I digress, neither replacement caused an issue. I had an
independent shop (same one) come to the house and do it for me. The
cost was around $250.00 US. They did it, as mentioned, in an hour
or so. The mirror was not an issue. They asked me to leave the side
windows slightly open for 24 hours. When one closes the doors
without the side windows open a little, it pushes the windshield
outwards. That will ruin the sealent behind the windshield, if it
is not dry.

However, I was told that the rubber seal that frames the
windshield, may have to be replaced the next time as it is getting
too hard to work with. This makes it difficult to replace the
windshield and creat a good seal.

They gave me a life time warranty on defects ( what ever that
means) and a dicount card as a frequent buyer…–

Windshield was replaced without incident. It was covered by my
insurance with no additional outlay by me. Local dealer farms out
all of this type of work.
FYI: Mine was equipped with rain sensors and heated. This
necessitates a higher cost part from Jaguar. Windshield costs $580

  • $68 gasket + labor. Estimate $750 total.
As an aside, cost for non-rain sensing type is $219 total if ‘‘OEM
quality’’ used and the gasket recycled.
    Hope this is useful intel.

If your car is a US car, you do not have a heated windshield.
On your car the rain sensing, non-heated windshield is part #
GNF8801BC and heated is GNF8801AC.

I have an 05 US spec car and it has a heated windshield. I can just
see the wires if the sun hits it right and there is a switch for it.

Cars here in the US could have heated windscreens if there is
a ‘Maple-Leaf’ on the driver’s door VIN plate.

That would be a Canadian Specs car, not a US specs car.
Canada had different specs, most of them weather (read COLD) related
such as heated windshield, seats and engine bock heater

I’m astounded at the price of only US$750. total for a heated
windshield supplied and installed.

I would like to replace my windshield-wiper-scratched one (heated
model). I was quoted ~$1400.Cdn. (including 12% taxes) here for a
heated one.

I then called a U.S. glass place just over the border in North
Dakota, hoping that it might be cheaper than here in Manitoba. I
was surprised when, without telling the U.S. place what I would be
paying here, they quoted me ~US$1300. They seemed knowledgeable
and reputable (though what do we, the consumer, ever really know).

Could we please hear what everyone else paid for their windshields?
(Or what they would have paid if their insurance companies hadn’t
paid for them.) I would gladly pay around $US800., but $1400.,
whether here or in the States, is just too much, in my opinion.

Thanks for the information.–

G’day Max.

$2600? I just replaced mine under my insurance policy! (you get one free
windscreen a year) I didn’t even have to ask the price as the windscreen
shop dealt directly with the insurance company. I hope I don’t attract any
Tasmanian rocks when I’m over visiting you blokes next year!!

Cheers

Howdy Murray…yes, I did the same…let the insurrance handle it.
I enquired at the windscreen place how much it was costing…hence
the figures…now whether those figures have been inflated because
of an insurrance job…who knows but it’s that sort of thing that
jacks insurrance costs up all the time.
As for Tassie Rocks mate…well, be warned, this island is
infested with bloody log trucks and idiots in 4x4’s who insist on
shaving corners all the time.
