[x300] 2003 XJR purchase?

Considering a purchase of a 2003 XJR with 60,000 miles. Any
particular issues I should be aware of, or things to check when I
look at it? Am I right that the timing chain and nikasil issues
with the earlier X308 had been resolved by 2003?

Thanks for any and all input. I previously owned a 1996 XJ6 – in
fact it is the car pictured on the X300 Book. On that car I had
the grille surround painted body color and added mesh grille
inserts, making it an XJRn’t. Now I’m looking to have the real
thing, if I can put my hands on a really good one.

Warren,

Unfortunately, it is totally beyond the realms of common decency
for you to purchase an XJR8. Nobody is allowed to have an XJR8 AND
an ‘E’ Type:-)>

Seriously though, all the problems with earlier models had been
sorted by 03. No Nikasil, no plastic tensioners, no substandard
water pumps, stronger clutch packs in the gearbox. However, Jaguar
do recommend that the metal tensioners are treated as service items
and changed at 100k miles. By 60k, rubber suspension components
may be getting a bit tired and the gearbox should have a fluid and
filter change.

Good luck with the search.–

I got a 2003 XJR, bought it about 18 months ago, with 93K
miles on the clock. We’re at 117K miles now.

I went for the most recent model 308 I could find in order
to avoid the NIkasil and plastic tensioners. Had the gearbox
flushed as well. So far, it has been pretty reliable. It
needs to be as I use it as my daily drive.

Major bills so far were for four new tires and a new rear
shock absorber.

I wasn’t aware of Jaguar recommendation on treating the
metal tensiors as service items. It’s not mentioned in my
JTIS, nor has it been mentioned to me by my Jaguar dealer.
Where did you get that recommendation from?
