[x300] 95 XJR6 diff oil leak

Hi my rear diff and cross member was covered in oil so I washed it
all off wirh a hot jet wash. The seals or a seal was replaced my a
main dealer a few years ago and do not know if they every cleaned
it after but I expect not. I run the car for about 60 miles and can
see a slight leak from the prop shaft drive pin on the diff. I have
a jaguar cd manual for the car and need to study it but wonder if
this seal can be replaced on the diff without removing the diff. I
think it can but not sure if it is a easy job and would like to
here from any one that has done this job. The car has done 104k and
drives great apart from that.
Please can any tell me a uk supplier of the shell spirex oil that
is recomended for the diff oil.
Thanks for your help.–

Sounds as if your pinion seal is leaking, it’s quite a common fault.
Replacing the seal is quite easy, but you also have to remove a nut and
refit it without upsetting the preload. This needs some skill to do it
properly - see the archives for lots of advice.

The recommended Shell Spirax oil for the diff is almost impossible to
obtain unless you want to pay ridiculous prices at a Jag main dealer.
Again, see the archives for lots of discussions on what to use whether
it be synthetic or dino oil.

In reply to a message from 540itouring sent Sun 7 Oct 2007:

As Chris says, plenty of advice in the archives, and no need to
disturb the diff. assembly. Job is pretty straightforward so don’t
be put off by all the scare stories - it’s only an oil seal you’re
replacing after all. Just be sure to follow the advice regarding
marking relative positions and returning to the marks on
reassembling. Some would advise tightening the pinion nut a
fraction further but I wasn’t tempted to do that for fear of
overloading the pinion shaft bearings.
As far as oil is concerned I don’t think Shell Spirax is available
any more, so I used Castrol SAF-XJ 75W-140 synthetic to refill mine.
Good luck, Tom.–
