[x300] '96 XJR Wipers not working

After searching the forum and finding a few postings, I have (a)
checked the fuse (OK); (b) replaced both relays; and, © replaced
the switch on the steering column, but my wipers still don’t work.
Any ideas before I break down and spend $$s paying someone to hunt
around for the problem?

Many thanks,

Chris–

The Body Processor Module controls the wiper/washer functions.
Does the washer work? If it does it would indicate that the
problem is in the BPM or downstream. Also, have you checked fuse 6
(20A) in the LH engine bay fuse box?–

Chris,

The wiper motor / transmission assembly on the X300s (or just about any
vehicle) is not overly complex device by any stretch of the imagination.
The wiring diagrams are extremely useful in this type of troubleshooting
endeavor.

I would advise that you disconnect the motor electrical connector and apply
the appropriate power and/or grounds to the respective conductors as
dictated by the wiring diagram. If the wiper motor runs as it should,
obviously the fault lies within the control circuitry. You cannot damage
the control circuitry if you supply the mentioned signals via the motor
electrical connector as the control side is isolated when the connector is
separated. Its quite possible your problem is something as simple as a
defective wiper park switch … but you will never know unless you do the
proper checks.

Again, the wiring diagrams are exceedingly valuable for any type of
electrical troubleshooting … far less expensive to perform some judicial
troubleshooting as opposed to the “shotgun” method of just replacing parts.

I had a similar problem with my 97 Sovereign. It turned out to be a
high resistance connection between the LH engine bay fuse box and
the wiper relays. This is the second problem of this sort I have
had (the other was between the RH fuse box and the ECU and stopped
the car). The solution is either to replace this part of the loom
or simply run another wire in parallel using Scotchlock connectors,
which is what I did. I spend 60 on another wiper moter before
discovering this though.–

Wiring diag should show the earth connection. Had a friend with an
XJ40 and his wipers would sometimes work, sometimes not, sometimes
not stop if they did start!
Found the earth, removed and wire brushed the connection and all A1
since then.–
