[x300] Aux audio inputs

I have the standard RDS radio-cassette which will act as a controller with a
CD changer if one is fitted, which it isn’t.

I would like to feed the output of my M-Station MP3 jukebox into this unit
and guess I can use the inputs that would normally be used by the changer -
I assume there is a connection already in place in the boot (where and what
sort?)

However, how do I persuade the radio-cassette to use this input when there
is not changer connected? The Tape/CD button appears to not do anything.

Regards,
Jerry

Jerry,

It depends a little on the model of your car, but these comments are most
likely to apply in all cases. The connection between the CD changer and the
head unit is digital not analogue. There is circuitry in the Jaguar CD
changer that identifies itself to the head unit and without this circuitry,
the head unit will never recognise that a changer is attached.

There are some people on the group who have swapped the changer in their
cars for better ones that also play MP3’s, and they may be able to give you
better clues, but even so I don’t know how you could get over the digital
connection unless someone makes an after market adapter.

Jerry,
I think it depends on the age of your car. I know the 98 MY and
newer look for the code that Dave talks about. The cars in the 95
MY and older I believe do not. I think the threads I’ve read where
people have successfully installed aftermarket equipment is on the
pre-95 (maybe pre-98) MY cars. I am not sure where / how the 96
and 97 MY fits in here.–

Jerry, If you completely strike out in coming up with a good
customized solution to getting your MP3 player to communicate with
your current in-dash radio/cassette unit, and you really want it
badly,—there are some low-cost aftermarket gadgets that can do it.
Ie., Radio Shack has a $30 wireless adapter/transmitter unit that
will connect to a typical CD/MP3 player unit and simply transmit
its output to your car’s radio (when the radio is tuned/set to the
pre-determined FM frequency). Just a thought.–

What you need is an interface module that will need to be placed
between the two pieces of equipment. Have a look on the net there
are several companies that manufacture interfaces for these
purposes.

The M-Station comes with an FM modulator but I have been told it isn’t very
good.

I have done a bit more digging and found the following:

http://www.incarexpress.co.uk/redirect2.php3?cat=acc&type=aux&res=10

which lists devices for Alpine AI-net and M-Bus. Does anyone know whether
the head unit fitted to a 96 car is to either of these standards?

As I suspected. However, it seems to be a non-standard implementation :frowning:

Alpine were very little help and the supplier I spoke to claim the standard
M-Bus aux-in interfaces don’t work.

Jerry,
Are you attempting to connect an Alpine CD changer to the
X300 head unit? If so, I suggest you search the archives on
this forum. There has been considerable discussion on the
subject and there are cited examples of inability of getting
anything but a Jaguar CD changer to communicate with the
Jaguar head unit. Good luck.–

Definitely search the archives, but I for one certainly bought an
Alpine CD changer that fitted under the parcel shelf and used the
round DIN plug there exactly like the Jag unit. That was in a late
95 XJ6 so it was probably 96MY.–

Nope - I just want access to the audio inputs to feed from an MP3 player
mounted in the boot with its own dash-mounted controller/display. Problem is
to fool the head unit into taking a CD audio input with no changer
connected.

Jerry,

I recently installed XM radio on my XJR. I used a ‘‘FM converter’’ to
feed the signal into the radio. You are able to select a frequency
(87.9 or 88.1). So whenever I want to listen to my XM radio, I tune
the radio to 87.9. Works perfect and you do not have to mess with
the wiring looms.
The FM converter is connected to the Antenna input, your original
antenna plug is connected to the FM converter. Very simple!

It’s certainly one solution - where did you get the FM modulator and what
did it cost?

Jerry,
On my XJS I have an Alpine MP3 changer (Ai-NET) in the trunk
connected to an Alpine receiver (M bus) via an Alpine FM modulator.
This modulator, which has a cockpit installed control/display, also
accepts an auxiliary input from RCA leads (such as from your MP3
player). I happen to have an extra one of these FM modulators
(brand new in the box) that I never used on my other car, just in
case you’re interested, they go for about US$65.00 average. Seems
to be exactly what you have. You just set it permanently to one
given mode and then just use the control you say you have for your
MP3 player. Let me know.

I just purchased an adaptor. You feed the adaptor into the cassette. There is a 3.5mm cable attached that stays outside the cassette and plugs right into your audio device. In my case, my iPhone. Actually old school, these adaptors have been around a long time and are pretty solid tech. A simple spring-loaded input device is held to the cassette head.
For about $6 -$11 on Amazon, worth a try.
