[x300] Cooling Fans stay on when hot outside, normal?

Hi, on my 1996 XJ6, when I turn off the car the fans stay on
for about a minute or too when it is hot outside. I am not
sure if this is normal? It dosent do it when its warm out,
just on those hot sunny days when I have been driving for a
bit. I do live in South Florida so it gets to about 95-100
everyday for the entire summer. Just wanna know if its a relay
problem, or is this just normal? Thank You! 1996 XJ6 Owner.–

It’s by design.
Actually, it wasn’t designed that way.
The circuit was modified at a later date for people in your
situation. Apparently they discovered it was such a good idea they
put it on all of the US models and possibly others, I suppose.

There is a plug close to the fire wall a bit to the right of the
ABS stuff. A white jumper is plugged into it changing the logic of
the cooling fans. Having spent a month in South Florida every
summer for several years, I would suggest that you definitely need
all the help you can get.

What it’s trying to do is to get rid of the heat soak, as they call
it, without the fan continuing to cool the water in the radiator,
there would be very little water movement after the engine is shut
down.

By making the radiator water cooler, the water tends to circulate
by convection. This insures a constant flow of water through the
combustion chambers, preventing them from boiling the water and
becoming very hot. If that were to happen, the chambers can become
hot enough to cause some pre-ignition if you were to restart the
engine within a short period of time. And in many cases the pre-
ignition is powerful enough to actually reverse the direction of
the engine during cranking. As you can imagine that makes it very
difficult to restart as well as creating a terrible noise and
making life very stressful on the starter.

As well as a few other explanations I have read about that I don’t
remember.–
