[x300] Damaged "Asteroid" wheel and tire questions

I managed to badly curb the front passenger’s wheel on my
2001 XJR. The damage is about 3 inches around the outside
and about 1 inch towards the center (3 inches square).

I haven’t yet taken them to a shop to get a repair quote,
and before I go I want to know:
-approximate cost (I’ve heard between $100 to $200)

  • Are the wheels aluminum or steel?
  • Painted, anodized or powder coated?

Also, because the tire compressed when I hit the curb, there
is a small (1/4 inch) chunk taken out of the sidewall just
above the wheel damage. My first instinct is to get the
tire replaced, but then I will have to get both front tires
replaced and, since they are at about 50% tread, I might as
well get all four (plus the spare to match) replaced.
Now I’m looking at around $1200.00…
Is the small sidewall ‘‘chunk’’ repairable? The tire did not
deflate and does not leak.

Also, my spare has the original unused OEM Pirelli on it,
but the car has 4 Continental ContiExtreme Contact 255/40
ZR18s.
Which does the list prefer?

ANy and all thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

Cheers,
Chris

The wheels are cast aluminum.

You can’t repair the chunk.

If I were you I’d buck up and replace all the tires too like your instincts
are telling you.

Look on Ebay, wheels are all over the place on there.

I would definitely NOT mix and match tire brands or models of tire.

Chris,

If the damage to the tire is only to the rubber outer skin, I’d not be
concerned about it immediately. However I would keep a very close eye
on it. If possible, rotate it to the rear, at least until I knew if it
was going to hold up.

As to the rim, there are numerous shops here in the states that can
repair such a gash as this. The cost ranges as you say, from
$100-$200. Once completed, you would never know there had ever been
any damage to the rim. However if it would ease your mind, take the
new one from the spare and use the previously damaged unit there.
