[x300] Determining Cylinders - x308

I recently had a P0308 - misfire on cylinder 8 on my 1997 XK8.
It’s probably related to the spark plugs, which the dealer replaced
a few weeks ago. What is the proper way to determine/count the
cylinder number on the V8. E.g., is #1 the cylinder closest to the
radiator on the LHD side and #2 is the cylinder closest to the
radiator on the RHD side, etc.

No. The industry standard way of numbering engine cylinders is
starting at the ‘‘free’’ end (away from the fylwheel). Its best not
to talk about the front of an engines, as it can get a bit
confusing with rear engined cars! Viewing the ‘‘free’’ end of the
engine, start in the 9 o’clock position, going clocokwise, start at
the first cylinder bank you come to, start numbering from
the ‘‘free’’ end, when you get to the end of the bank, start at the
next bank of cylinders going clockwise.

This works for in-line engines, Vee engines, flat engines. Of
course there are exceptions, including the Jaguar XK which numbers
the cylinders from the flywheel end.

N.B. For longitudinal engine installations it is common, at least
amongst engineers, to refer to the RH and LH cylinder banks from
the orientation of the driver, not someone looking at the engine
from the front of the car. Be aware of this when talking about RH
and LH.

Using this notation the Jag V8 is cyls 1-4 RH bank, 5-8 LH bank, 1&
5 at the front.–
