[x300] Odd Sound from Dash/Engine Compartment

My recently purchased 1996 XJ6 makes an intermittent sound like a
dinner bell ringing when I get up over 65MPH. Can’t tell if it’s
from the dash or engine. Doesn’t seem to be throttle-induced, as I
can coast from 90+ and it makes the ringing sound until my speed
gets back down below 65MPH. Would appreciate any
suggestions/remedies.–

dawg,

I had a similar problem when I first got my 4.0 V8. It wasn’t a
bell type sound, more a droning whine. It happened from 50mph
upwards. Eventually, I realised that it was my wife tring to tell
me to slow down:-)

I’ve heard of whistling, banging and other noises but, never a bell
ringing. Perhaps the previous owner had a chauffeur and had this
bell fitted as some type of warning to let him know that the
chauffeur was going too fast. After all, theses cars are so quiet
and comfortable it’s hard to tell the difference between 50 and
80mph.

It will be interesting to find out what is the cause of the noise,
sorry I can’t be of much help.–

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I had an
intermittent light metal ‘rattle’ coming from the dash, only
at cetain speeds. It turned out to be a screw in the console
that had broken loose (I assume the frame torqued somehow,
or hit a good bump, and just yanked it out of its somewhat
flimsy mating). I guess a draft or some resonating vibration
in the cabin made these loose screws jump around. This was
inside the center air vent wood application - you have to
get something behind the edges of that unit and yank kinda
hard to get the clips free without damaging the wood. There
are two screws at the bottom that affix the dash to the top
of the ski slope. If you can get that air vent / wood unit
off without much trouble, it might be worth checking.–
