[x300] Wheel Speed Sensor

I need to replace the rear wheel speed sensor on my '97 XJR
following a bearing replacement job. The existing sensor sheared in
half, of course, during efforts to remove. Does anyone out there
know of an alternate source for these items, i.e less expensive, so
far my searching has shown pricing around $400?
Thank you all.–

You are correct 217-00 plus postage which = $334-00 plus postage
from JDHT, problem is when assembled no copper greese was used,
water gets in rots the aluminium that swells and seizes the sensor.
Unless you can find one in a scrape yard and spend time cleaning
and trying to remove it new is your only way out.–

I would suggest trying Coventry West in Lithonia GA before spending
the $$ for a new one. Ebay will be cheaper still, if you can find
one.Good Luck–

Never seen rear units on ebay only fronts, most breakers will not
spend time removing them/–

I wonder if wheel speed sensors from another brand of car would work?

I’ve never studied them in detail, researched the electrical specs, or even
done an actual side-by-side visual comparison but it seems to me the the Jag
sensors “look” the same as the Toyota sensors which look about the same as
GM sensors which look about the same as…well, you get the idea.

I wonder if most of these are a rather generic design?

Worth some research, perhaps?

G’day Doug…you assertion is pretty close, they all operate on
the same principal of a magnetic ‘Hall effect’ type of sensoring.
The sensor picks up it’s signal…or more accurately generates it’s
signal from the reluctor wheel attached to each hub and it’s
the 'castellated design that makes and breaks the signal generation.
This in turn of course is passed on to the ECM.
Front ones control speed and slip angles and the rear ones are
basically for the Traction control systems.
Generally the only thing that prevents intermixing is their
physical design amd mounting characteristics which manufacturers
cunningly work out to be different.
The important things are mounting and mounting distance from the
reluctor wheel, both very important…have a look at the way they
are mounted and you will see what I mean.
Most problems with these is not the sensor itself but usually
wiring and plug problems due to atmospheric corrosion.
Service wise, they should be removed each time you replace brake
pads and clean the sensor face, mounting and the reluctor wheel of
accumulated debris.
