[x300] x308 xjr Header tank, coolant leak

Hi all,

I think I found a leak, but ?!?!?

I had the feeling that I loose the coolant mainly when I
drive like crazy (sport mode on and foot on the floor)

So I drove like that for few kilometers and than lifted the
car looking for a leek. It wasn’t difficult to find, it was
dropping on my face. What confuses me a bit is the place
where it leaks.

It leeks from the ‘‘Header tank’’ which is in the front part
of the engine space on the lower left side. It seems like
the actual leak is from the hole on the side of the tank. I
tried with a plastic strip and there is just a hole there.

So my questions are:

  1. Is it correct that there is just a hole in the Header
tank? no tube going to it, no pressure valve, just open hole?
  2. If there is supposed to be a hole, what could be wrong in
the system, that the coolant overflows there? + How does
    this ‘‘header tank’’ work than?

Thanks a lot for any help.–

That tank is called the ‘atmoshperic catchment tank’. There is a
hole in the side (and a hose in the top) and it catches the
overflow from the reservoir via the pressure cap. If the coolant
expands beyond the paramters then the excess is transfered to the
catchment tank and when the system cools down, some coolant is
drawn back into the reservoir via the same pressure cap.

It’s called a coolant recovery system.

The first thing to try is a new cap as the original one may be
defective. You might be getting an excesssive pressure buildup from
a slight overtemp situation or worst case is a ‘blown/leaking head
gasket’

Adding to Bob post, this coolant recovery tank ( as we used to call
them ) is not designed to hold a lot of coolant without leaking.
The right amount (with engine cold) is just above the ‘‘bowl’’ like
shape at the bottom of it.
With any type of spirited driving ( especially left hand turn)
coolant will puke out of the hole.
Not the greatest design

Hello,

I just bought a 1999 XJR and I’m having the same problem where my
coolant is leaking from the header tank, what’s strange is it only
hapens after I shut the car off. I put on a new cap but the problem
hasn’t stopped. I hope it’s nothing serious with the heads. Did you
ever figure out what was happening with yours? Any advice would be
appreciated.–

Mine was leaking from the Recovery tank hole as well, I
found that when I had swapped out the motor I hooked up the
2 small hoses going to the Expansion tank wrong. switched
them back and problem solved–

Mrs. T,

Take a look somewhere down this page to see how the expansion tank
bleed and overflow pipes can be fitted incorrectly when intuitively
made to ‘look right’;

Incorrect connection of these pipes causes exactly the symptoms you
describe.

Good Luck

Steve

Yep, she’s cured! Now it runs like a dream. Best car I’ve ever had.
I live in the California Sierra Foothills and it is so much fun
driving these mountian roads. The handeling and power of this car
is like nothing I’ve ever experienced! Thanks for your help.

Enjoy, but don’t slip off the edge.

Jags are very good at rolling down mountain sides but absolutely
useless at Driver impact protection when rolling over more than 10
times.

Don’t ask me how I know.
