[xj] 78 XJ6L: Brake fluid reservoir to master cylinder seal

I have a small amount of brake fluid seeping from the
rearmost seal between the reservoir and the master cylinder.

Are the seals that sit in the top of the master cylinder
available anywhere apart from in the full master cylinder
rebuild kit, please? I’ll buy the full seal kit if I have
to but it seems an awful waste when all I need is one seal!

Go to NAPA, they have all the ‘‘O’’ rings you need.
I’m sure you have one of those in florida.

Sometimes, the holes become elongated where the retaining pins go
through to hold down the reservoir. In that case, even new seals
don’t always stop the leak. An effective, if not too pretty trick
is to secure a long plastic zip tie around the reservoir and master
cylinder in the center between the two ports. This will apply
pressure to hold the reservoir tightly to the m/c and puts the
seals into a little bit of compression. I ran one that way for
years with no leaks.–

Thanks, Walt and John.

I’ll try squeezing it down like John suggests and if that
fails I’ll take the old seals to NAPA and they can match them.

Replaced the master yesterday and the rear master to reservoir
seal, leaked every bit of fluid out slowly over 24 hours…
Nothing seemed to stop the leak, the zip tie trick worked.
The bottom of the original 1984 reservoir is deformed just a
small amount and that must be restricting a good seal on the
rear inlet to the master. This work for time being…–
