[xj] 86 XJ6 for sale

I have an 86 XJ6 Vanden Plas for sale. It has a recently blown head gasket
(pressure leaking into the cooling system). The body is in excellent
condition, no accidents, a slight amount of rust at lower corner of
windshield. Color is black with Buckskin interior. The transmission was
professionally rebuilt last fall ($1800). The steering rack bushings and upper
ball joints have been replaced.
I would like to get $2000 for the car. I have an extra engine that can be
included. It has a good fuel injection rail and 1st stage of the catalytic
converter. Also good exhaust manifold and a rebuildable head.
Anyone interested?
Thanks,
Tom Lennon

I’m in Ventura,California (actually Ojai Valley) about an hour North of Los
Angeles.
The car has about 150,000 miles and is original black with buckskin (tan)
interior.
As I said it has a blown head gasket. The cost of repair is between $700-1200
if done by a shop and depending on the condition of the head/block. I recently
had the head off because of a burnt valve and had a complete valve job done. I
know the head is in good shape and suspect that the surface of the block may
need to be “shaved” to better mate with the head. The air cond. compressor is
fairly new as well as the fuel cooler and filter drier. The car ran very well
until the head gasket blew and that was about 15,000 miles after the head work
was done. I have all receipts and original manuals and sales brochures.
I’m including my original post here:

Hi everyone. I’ve been off the list for a couple of months because of time
constraints. I like what you’ve done with the website.

After great deliberation and with some reluctance, my wife and I have decided
to sell our 86 XJ6 and focus our attention on our 79 XJ6L (22,000mi).

The 86 has 112,000 miles. I’ve owned it since about 80,000 miles. I have
most of the maintenance records. It was maintained by the dealer up to about
65,000 mi. There is somewhat of a gap in records from 65k to 80k. However,
the last PO had an excellent jag mechanic (who I still use for some services)
who replaced the head between 75k and 80k. He did an excellent job on the
head. The engine is very strong with oil pressure over 40 at 2000 rpm; it
does not overheat – the temperature gauge approaches 95 on a hot day in city
traffic. The transmission is original and shifts perfectly. At the 90k
service interval, the transmission fluid looked very good – no metal. All
brakes are new within the last 15k, I did not replace the differential seals
when I did the rear brakes and there is a leak (sorry). I’ve replaced all 4
ball joints and tie rod ends in the last 15k. I can’t remember everything
I’ve done, but I’ve carefully maintained this car in detail, for example, I
recently replaced most of the vacuum hoses. Interior is not perfect, but
very very good. The car is sort of maroon/red (I don’t know what the
official color is) and the interior is tan (Saddle?). The tires are in good
shape – Pirelli P4000s.

Problem areas:

The car has been repainted once, maybe 4 or 5 years ago. It was a very good
job. There are some very small rust spots in the usual places. About
quarter size on 3 roof posts and a couple of small spot on wheel wells.
There is no rust that is structural in nature and I consider the rust to be
very minimal – I just want to make a full disclosure.

It looks like I have a leaky front main seal.

The cruise control is not working. I suspect the usual brake switch short.
But I haven’t attempted a repair.

It needs a driver’s side fuel return valve.

I suspect the center support bearing on the drive shaft needs adjustment or
replacement. I have a very slight wobble, not noticeable to passengers or
most people, at about 55 or 60 mph.

The headliner has been acceptable to me; but it could be replaced.

The trip computer doesn’t work.

I replaced the center portion of the exhaust system with a section from the
earlier car that did not have the second catalytic converter. (that saved me
a bunch of money and increased horse power) The car subsequently failed the
very strict Virginia emissions test on the Nitrogen Oxide portion – by a
hair. It passed the Carbon Monoxide and Hydro Carbon portions with flying
colors. The Nitrogen Oxide portion indicated that the car was running a
little too lean. I have addressed a leak in the AFM connector hose and I
believe that the car would pass now; but I have not retested. I will have
the car tested in New Mexico (where I’m sure it will pass) if no one
purchases the car by Memorial Day.

I believe that everything that I have not mentioned works perfectly.

It has Dayton 60 spoke wire wheels, however, I plan to keep the wheels for my
79 and replace them with the stock wheels. That is unless the buyer wants to
pay a premium to keep the wires.

The car is registered in New Mexico, but I live in Washington, DC. I am
willing to deliver the car to anyone located between those two places over
Memorial Day weekend.

I think this car is worth somewhere between $6500 and $7000.

Steve,

The Jag I was going to buy in Philly turned out to be unacceptable.

I will be in DC on Saturday.

Can I come and see the car on Saturday?

Please reply with your phone number.
