John, don’t know about Duncan Brown, and his engineering a cost
effective AC amp, but what are you considering ‘‘cost effective’’? I
know the AC amps from most parts dealers are around $275.00, or
there abouts, but Caufeld Jag, in Australia sold me one for
$182.00, including shipping to the US. This is the one that
resembles a shotgun shell in size and shape, and reported to be
better than the original. Takes about 5 minutes to install, and
don’t have to take the old one out, and, so far, is working great.
For all that the amp does, I doubt that it’ll ever get much cheaper
than that. But good luck in your search. Keith–

at engineering a cost effective replacement AC amp?

John
I think he built a successful version on a cicruit board and ran it
in the car. But since his report on that and the suggestion that
he could turn out a kit for (I think) $20 we’ve heard nothing
further.
He’d got a bit further than shown here (which looks pretty good to
me)
I did track down contact details for the guy I believe designed it,
but we never followed that up.–

Does anyone know what ever happened to Duncan Brown and his
efforts at understanding the Delanair system and his quest
at engineering a cost effective replacement AC amp?

Keith,
I had just been doing some reading in the archives and I
came across some interesting threads on the subject.
Unfortunately they stopped in 2005 so I was just wondering
if any of the old timers knew what happened. I have come
across the amp you are talking about. THEPARTSBIN.COM sells
it for $294. That has to be one heck of a profit margin.
Your price from AUS is easier to take.
Regards

Yes, I saw several parts houses with prices around your quote, and
several around 275. The $182.00 price was only a month ago, so
should still be current. shipping time was about a week.–

Any problems with sourcing this, let me know. I live less than a minute
away from Caulfield Jag, pass them twice daily and know the principles
personally.

It is an integral part of the climate-control system in the S3 and looks
after the operation of the system. For a detailed description of its
operation I’m afraid you’ll have to look up the J-L archives.

Fazal, you weren’t in Little Rock, Arkansas last week were you? I
ran into a nice couple on the local Trolley ride from Melbourne,
visiting here. Didn’t catch their name though. Said they lived
close to Caufeld Jag also. Wish I’d caught their name, maybe you
know them. Keith.–

I’ll send you a pic of the one I busted open. The problem appears to be in
the relay contacts inside. They potted the whole thing in resin when they
built 'em, but, they apparently didn’t think to do it in a controlled
atmosphere, so the relays have lots of air inside that probably was moist and
polluted from the factory. Not bright.–

So what exactly does this Amp you speak of, do?
It receives infomation from the various sensors in the AC set-up, Dalton
collates the info and turns the servo to the appropriate positions to
get to, and hold, set cabin temps. The servo actually do the mechanical
work using cam operated devices. Everything carefully tuned to the best
effect - automatically…
Yeah, I was told the 1620 did a nice pecan encrusted chicken breast with
apple brandy sauce so I thought I’d chase it up. :-). And, please, we
are just good friends who happened to meet 10k miles from Melbourne!
