[xj] FOG LIGHTS?

Could someone enlighten me?
On my 76 XJ12L there are two holes drilled (cut) in the front skid panel
(under front bumper). I would presume that this is where the stock fog
lights were mounted originally. Can anyone confirm if this is accurate
AND/OR could someone accurately tell me where the lights should be mounted
and what were original lights (Manufacturer, size, candle power, etc.)

Question 2: How does this all function. Does the fogs shut off when the
high beams are activated? Dot he fogs work at the same time with the
parking lights, the driving lights (low beam) or both or neither?

Also, the dash light switch has a setting for FOG, but the switch does not
go there. Seems I heard about someone doing something to one of these
switches to make it work?

TIA

If the archives were available, I’d send you there…but:
My understanding is that on the European SII the running/signal lights are in the front valence. The U.S. SII has the turn signals in the bumper, so the holes in valence are unused except as a way for the wires to get to the lamps.
The light switch was common to both models and on U.S. spec cars does not go to the FOG position. I think someone out there on the list has taken the switch apart and modified it. Maybe that person can reiterate the procedure.

The Fog lamp switch requires very little modification to go into Fog
position. To get to Fog you need to be able to push the switch in, and then
turn to Fog position. What is keeping you from being able to push the switch
in is a simple c-clip (or e-clip) on the switch shaft. Merely lower the
switch from the dash panel and look at the shaft. You will see this small
(about 1/4 inch diameter) clip on the shaft. Remove it and you now have the
ability to provide voltage to your Fog Lamp wires. Understand, at least on
the Series 3, that when you put your Fog Lamps on, your Head lamps turn off.
Regarding mounting, I have a 1987 Series 3, which also had holes in the
valence, but which looked way to low for fog lamp mounting. There are
brackets you can get from Jaguar, $16.00 US each, for mounting to the Series
3 bumper underside. I’m sorry, my experience with the Series 2 is limited to
a test drive of a 1976 XJ12C long, long ago.

OK,

Rick Smith wrote about fog-lights.

We have a UK spec. XJ6 Ser.II from '73. I have just recently dismounted my
(original and IMHO very ugly) fog-lights.

The switch: On the ser.II you do not even have to be able to press the
switch in (at least we do not), but I have a vague memory of some similar
modification with a plastic tap that had to be removed for those cars which
didn’t have fog-lights mounted as original. Open the switch, it isn’t
complicated! - could probably need some cleaning as well if you e.g. have
had intermittant problems with instrument panel illumination (as we had…
:-)… oh, just noted that Steve Chatman replied on that, but it doesn’t
look like that on our car (“early” '73). Anyway, when fog light are (were)
on, main beams were off and position lights (front, below bumper, in the
turn indicator assembly) were off. This could ofcourse differ in different
countries according to legislation - in Germany e.g. the rules regarding
which lights you are allowed to combine differs from Sweden.

The mounting: Ours were mounted through two holes below the all-chrome
front bumper, and just in front of the lower grille. Mounting was simple,
just the original bolts dirctly from the fog-light assemblies, easy access
when bonnet opened. Cables to fog-lights are red&yellow and come, if I
remember correctly in the “port” wing, then after feeding the “port” fog
light continued over to the “starbord” fog light behinde the bumper.

The fog-lights: Original mark was, I believe, Cibi (the one with a cat!)
and yellow lenses. Bulbs fitted in ours were 21W, socket I don’t remember.
If you arrange for postage you can have ours, if you’d like (not extremely
well kept, but else I’ll just throw them

Yours,

Anders Backlund

I’m not sure if the same applies to the US 76 XJ12 as to my UK 81 XJ6, but
mine mounts the fog lamps on two metal brackets (Jaguar spares, still
available here a couple of years ago) that bolt onto the bumper mountings.
Of course, as the UK bumpers are way different to the US ones, this may not
be of any use at all

Paul Gover.

I’m still looking for a authoritative source on late Series II
fog lamp placement for those with Federal bumpers. Those
with chrome bumpers have a nice spot and with the Series
III you get bolt on brackets. Brackets are not listed with fog
lamps in the parts manual for the Series II and I don’t see
where they would attach if you had them. As for the Series
II, it would appear that you should just drill a hold through
the bottom of the bumper and that is something I want to do
only once. The wires are there, the switch is there, the lights
are ready, so where do I drill?

I know that this sounds tedious, but I’m keeping the 78
concours while I can and I want the placement to be correct.
