After a few months of non activity, I brought the head from my 71 XJ6 to a
local rebuilder and he said it’s not rebuildable. You may recall I bent two
valves last summer timing the cams.
It’s warped 15/1000. He said they usually don’t rebuild them if they are
more than 3/1000 warped. In addition, the cams won’t turn due to the warp.
It’s already been skimmed once (by this shop 25 years ago). He said that it
would not be a good idea to line bore the cams. Apparently the only reason
it was working was the head bolts holding it straight. He said heat was the
probable cause.
So, it’s time to look for another head.
How can I tell a good head? What should I expect to pay for a rebuilt, or
rebuildable head? (in USA)
Lou, talk to Coventry West about this. They may actually be able to rebuild
yours, or at least give you an idea of what’s best to do now.–
