[xj] Hood/Bonnet cable snapped

Hello,

Yesterday, the passenger side hood release cable on my '82 XJ6 snapped
when I tried to open the hood. I was able to open the hood using a
screwdriver in the passenger wheel well.

I found that the cable snapped at the hood catch on the passenger side. In
fact, if I just had a bit more cable, I could just thread more into the
hood catch. But, I have only a centimeter or so of cable left at the end
near the hood catch.

I thought about rigging something up where I’d “extend” the cable using
more threaded wire and small, crimped metal sleeves, but I don’t think I
can do it in such a way as to not interfere with the proper operation of
the release.

I looked in the archives, but didn’t find much on how others have solved
this problem. Must I replace the whole cable? If so, how does it attach to
the pull handle in the interior. When I looked at the pull handle, I saw
two “bobbed” metal wires…one for each hood latch. Will I have to replace
both hood release cables and the pull handle?

Thanks in advance,

Marcus: you can replace this quite easily. You do not need to replace
the handle; you can either order the cables from Jaguar (see below) or
you can use bicycle brake cable which has the ferrule on the end. The
ferule catches in a slot on the handle. It is then threaded through the
cable sleeve to come out at the latch end where it is held by a
screw-ferrule.
The Jaguar part number for the passenger side cable is BD33311. For the
driver’s side it is BD33310.

In reply to a message from Dr Gregory Andrachuk sent Mon 11 Dec 2006:

I have a similar problem on my 81 XJ6.
I actually let a screwdriver touch the cable and the positive
battery terminal at the same time, melting my cable in half.
I tried replacing it with a cable from another car, but the end was
so splintered from the screw, that it wouldn’t feed through the
sleve.
So, with more important issues going on with my car, I removed the
catch from that side of the car and have been riding around with
one side of the bonnet unlatched.

Problems I had were:
I took the cable out of the sleve.
Couldn’t get another cable in the sleve
Pulled the sleve through the firewall

Now I’m having problems getting the sleve back where it goes at the
handle. Getting the cable through the sleve, and getting the cable
tight enough to activate the latch.

Maybe Marcus will be able to help, when he gets his figured out.

David, when you get a repacement cable, see the 2nd pic here for how to cover
it neatly with woven vinyl & shrink tubing – no more sparks! You can do same
for the throttle cable.

David,

As Gregory suggested, I plan to grease the cable liberally before
attempting to thread it through the sleeve…with the sleeve in its current
position. If that doesn’t work well, I plan to undo the cable sleeve near
the catch and straighten it out toward the headlights. Then, I’ll thread
the new cable through. Once it’s through, I’ll route it back along the
firewall to the hood catch.

Would a simple cable extension with some cable clips (Crosby
style clamps or saddle style) work ?? Just using my
engineering skills (albeit only limited). They make tiny
ones, tow on each cable end would work great.

I have noticed my cable is near snapping.

Albeit a new cable is ideal, but qould work in theory, much
better than crimp connectors.–

Have you tried lubing the whole mechanism, inside the latches as well as the
cables? There really isn’t much force required of the cable in a properly
lubed setup.–

I thought about this Dave and even “tried” it…but…i didn’t have enough
good cable left (outside of the sleeve) to “join” to the extension.— 1985vdp davewilliamson2@verizon.net wrote:
