At what times should this light be on at normal circumstances? We have…
Lock Accessory Ignition and Start.

AFIAK, before cranking in the ignition position, on constantly.
With engine just started, it should extinguish after a couple seconds.
If your engine chokes, stumbles, misfires badly, it will illuminate. For
example, idle drops below normal ranges (been there).
If you lose power while driving, i.e. ignition amp dies, it will illuminate
(been there).

I’m wagering a guess that if your charging system or coil fails/falls below
norm voltage, it would illuminate?

Can anyone else add to this list?

This is an XJ-12, 76

I think the S3 electrical system is identical in this situation. The only
time it should be on is in Ignition when the engine is not running, and
Start, before the engine catches.
