Hello,
Has anyone put nitrous on their XJ6?? Could the engine handle a 100 bhp
shot? The XJ6 really does not have the best accel. The engine seem
powerful enough (200-225 bhp?), but the BW tranny does not seem to handle
the power, and yes the car weighing 4900 lbs does play part in it. I have
been dropped a few times by some guys in Hondas and I wouldn’t mind the
extra power for passing and freeway driving.

Ps: would it be smart on an engin with 133K?

Alex: the simple answer is: “NO”. I think it is safest to remember that the
XJ is a luxury touring car, NOT a sports car, much as it invites spirited
driving, and can handle anything we can reasonably give it. But stressing
aged components is a recipe for disaster. $.02 Canadian (and we know what
that is worth).

Go to AJ6 engineering web page and read the story of the development of the
XK power plant from the mid sixties to 87. That explains why not to attemp
to get much more power from the later engines.

Yes it has been done, yes it could handle a brief 100hp shot as the XK
bottom end is quite tough thanks to the 7 mains and strong crank. Having
said that you’d be nuts to bolt that onto a 133K engine, you’ve probably
got relatively worn rings, sludge in crankcase etc etc. By all means if
you rebuild the engine, use carillo rods and some of those extra nice
pistons Rob Beere sells. But I wouldn’t go whacking that sort of force
on a tired engine. Nitrous puts a huge amount of stress on rods,
bearing, crank and tranny particularly, then to a lesser degree pistons,
rings and stuff like engine mounts and tranny mounts. The reason being
that it is very sudden onset and hence there is a big torque hit.

So the answer is yes, by all means, but doesn’t expect your engine or
transmission to last very long.

BTW, anyone with 150K miles or more on the original engine is probably
blowing a significant slug of their horse power out the valves and past
the pistons. Do a compression test before you try bolt on HP, it’s
amazing how much more lively the XJ6 is when it’s getting a real 240 out
of the engine instead of a hundred and something out of a tired engine.
I certainly noticed the difference after my XK6 was rebuilt.

This mail is a natural product. The slight variations in spelling and
grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to
be considered flaws or defects.

Buy a v12.

Alex,
My advise is: Buy an E-type. Maybe a Ser lll with the v-12.
