[xj] Jaguar Tri Carb SetUp

Keith,

Believe it was insured but my heartburn with this is that if you collect on the insurance on packages like
this, they want all the bits returned to them before they pay you for it. Do not want to give up the other
two good carbs and manifold to collect on the insurance.

I looked at Burlen in the UK and they probably have one but also just found one here in the colonies for
a reasonable price, so will get this one here. The seller is paying for it so maybe next time they will
pack the shipment properly!

Thx,

Was the package insured? probably not! There must be plenty
of these carbs available second hand Burlen may have stock
new or used. There are other SU repairers in UK Carburettor
Exchange in Leighton Buzzard, Gower & Lee in Watford.
Must be suppliers or breakers in USA…? if not try
Jaguar Breakers in North Wales UK www.davidkellycars.co.uk
or Eurojag richard@eurojag.com

Anyone have any idea where I can get a spare float bowl for this carb and an idea on a price? If it were
not fuel related might think about trying to have it welded, but not with this.

Joe,

To go first class I’d sure use your manual choke carbs on
the new manifold (front and rear). If you sell them, be
sure you have all of the automatic choke bits that weren’t
shown in the photo of the triple manifold.

The automatic choke is a bother–a lot of clutter, and a
fire hazard whenever is spews out raw gas (yesterday
afternoon being the most recent time for me).–

To tell the truth have had a couple of people asking about selling the two 2’’ SU carbs for their car and
wanted to keep both of them functioning.

Surprising finding Bob. For my monry thrsedan manifold are
horozontal and the E-types drop down - always with the carbs
vertical of course rather than tilted. I’m going to photograph my
setup carefully to reord it. You can make a significant, though not
numerically huge, difference by rocking/slipping the engine one way
or the other in the slotted mount holes. On the 4.2 E-type you need
to be careful the underslung linkage doesn’t foul the frame rail
and jam WOT…

Correct approximately, Pete. The ‘‘dogleg’’ down on the
E-manifold is obvious in photos and in situ. The saloon
manifold has straight runners, but the angles with which
they intersect the flanges aren’t exactly 90 deg. The total
upward slope is probably 1/4 - 1/2 inch. It’s not obvious
just by looking at it.

But the down-slope required to fit the E is much more than
the up-slope provided by the saloon manifold. That raises
the question of how inverting the latter suffices for
adaption to the E, let alone the plumbing and linkage
nightmares. Maybe there’s a vertical displacement of the
carb mounting holes relative to the inboard flange–on the
saloon or maybe on both. That would lower the carbs an
additional amount.–

Joe,
I believe there were two styles of manifold for the MKX. I have
both on my shop somewhere. I will post photos of each to see if it
will be of any help to you. I have one MKX engine complete and
original and it will give an idea of one style manifold. The other
is off the engine and separate and may not show as much as the
assembled unit. My rear float bowl is broken off also when the MKX
engine was dropped during a move. So there may have been 5000 MKX
triple carb float bowls and now there are 4998. It is not an easy
part to find. I am no expert on these details but I do have a 50
year collection of english car- especially Jaguar- parts. I do not
normally sell any as I have 5 cars to restore! Well someday. I
can’t wait to see your triple carb setup!–
The original message included these comments:

Well I have good and bad news about the triple carbs and manifold.
The good news is that the carbs and manifold have arrived.
The bad news is that whoever packed them in the box needs to find another line of work. The manifold
and carbs were put into a large cardboard box with no packing material what so ever and shipped
ground from Fresno California to Phoenix.
When they arrived the assembly had punched several good sized holes in the box but all of the big bits
remained inside. When I got it opened found the assy rattling around inside the box with a good 4-5’’
space on all sides, so it was like a pin-ball machine inside there.
SU builds things pretty tough and so far all the damage I have found is that the rear float bowl assy
was broken clean off of the carb.
Its part 40a in this diagram

Are you referring to the early 3.8 5-piece and later 4.2
1-piece versions? Joe has the 4.2, according to the photo
in the link he posted.–
