[xj] Mass Air Flow Meter

Hi

My 1983 XJ6 needs a new MAF the one on it is currently a Lucas
73172D which is no longer available, there appears to be a number
of different makes and models, the most common one is the Bosch
EAC3821 this is the one most used in the US ( I’m in Australia ) my
question is does anyone know if this meter will operate OK on a
euro XJ6 or is it only good for the US cars

According to Roger Bywater, there is a difference 'tween the Euro
and Federal AFM. It does matter.

Visited the breaker yards lately?

Actually, I think I wound up with a Euro AFM somehow. Send me a
direct email to remind me to check the Numbers…–

Not sure if it matter, but I just went though this.

According to the S-57? diagram…

MAF wires are different colors, but the plug is the
same…meaning there is no difference between the wiring of a
MAF from a euro car or a fed spec car('cept wire color). As
to calibration…they can all be calibrated to the car.

I know mine isn’t original, but have no idea what it came
off of.
But I know pretty much any L-jetroic MAF could work…BMW,
Miata, MR2, supra etc…–

Thanks for the info

I have just had a look see under the bonnet ( Hood ) and it has
Federal staped in the engine bay, so I will assume that the Bosch
EAC3821 will work.

I am a bit reluctant to use a second hand one, and a rebuilt one is
twice the price over here than in the US–

You’ll be OK with either, Gary - but out of interest; what went wrong
with the original…?

Mine’s a 73172D taken off a Euro with only 39K on the odometer.
HOwever, I am pretty sure I cannibalized the carbon trace PCB off
of it to use in mine. (Aye, I just checked and I did have to snap
off two of the retaining set screws which held the PCB in place -
so it’s no good to you anyways…)

Speaking of which - this carbon trace is actually what’s different
IIRC 'tween the Euro and Federal cars. The slopes are cut
different.

In fact there really isn’t much more to an AFM electrically
speaking - other than the crude temp sensor.–
