[xj] Nardi Steering Wheel On ebay USA

Nosing around on eBay USA and ran across this Nardi Steering
wheel. Seller claims to not have any knowledge of Jaguars
and just lists what he took it off of. He claims to be a
wrecking yard scavenger and states he found it in a wrecking
yard on a 1977 XJ12. Anyway, here is a TinyURL to the auction.

I have no knowledge of who this is and what he is selling.
This posting is for information only!!! I just recall many
have stated that they like Nardi steering wheels. I happen
to have one on Old Red my Series I and have grown to like it.ā€“

The Nardi steering wheel in Old Red measures 15 1/4ā€™ā€™ outside
diameter. I agree with Robert that it seems to be a perfect
fit to the car with a clear view to all gauges on the dash.
I am only 5ā€™ 8ā€™ā€™ tall but I can not see where a taller person
would have anything blocked in their line of sight with that
wheel. This seller claims this wheel is 14.5ā€™ā€™ in diameter.
If that is true that would only be 3/8ā€™ā€™ smaller on the
radius. I donā€™t think that 3/8ā€™ā€™ would be any different in
sight lines on a Series I dash. I also took a look on my
Series III and I canā€™t see where it would obstruct anything
on that dash.

I seem to recall there were two different hubs listed for
the Nardi steering wheel on the XJ6/12 cars, one for earlier
cars and one for later cars. Unfortunately, I donā€™t remember
when the change happened. If someone is interested in this
wheel I strongly suggest that they do some research to see
if a hub off of a 1977 will fit your car.ā€“

According to the web site at Crowderā€™s Customizing the break
was 1975. It list an adapter for cars 1968-1975 and another
adapter for cars 1975-1987. Not sure what the difference is
or if there really is a difference. They donā€™t list a
different part number or a price difference. They do have a
different internal SKU number. I just recall there have been
discussions here before and the hub change was pointed out.
Perhaps an archive search might come up with something, I
didnā€™t look because I am not interested in buying.

Right. The early hub is harder to find; the late is easy.
This difference (which I think is in the splined shaft)
means that some of the later factory wheels (XJS sports for
example) arenā€™t suitable for our S1s.

Regarding diameters, you evidently have the 390 mm (15.4
inches) while the one for sale is probably the 360 mm (14.2
inches). Thereā€™s also a 330 mm (13 inches).

I think the smaller wheels begin to look a little ā€˜ā€˜hot roddy.ā€™ā€™ā€“

Rightā€“the adapter spaces the wheel about 2 inches away from
the turn signal switchā€“a PITA.

There are two things that help a bit. If you have access to
a lathe, you can reduce the thickness of the adapter by
about 3/8 in. Also, you can straighten the bend in the
ā€˜ā€˜stalkā€™ā€™ of the signal switch, allowing it to angle back into
closer proximity to the wheel.ā€“

I cant claim credit, it was on when I bought the car.
Interestingly though it is a black body and not a
chrome/polish one. I have so far seem no other black one
(?).I actually prefer it this way (tastes and colorsā€¦).

The horn push has a Nardi emblem and not a Jaguar one like
the one that is for sale.

I also find that it is positioned too high and far away from
the controls even with the steering column positioned at its
lowest and had been contemplating shaving the boss. Now I
got used to itā€¦

That wheel on eBay will get a good price ā€¦ :)ā€“

Nice, used, garden variety Nardis can be had for much less ā€¦without
the hub ! New ones are about $500 as I recall, plus another $200 or
so for the hub, if Nardi still offers a Jaguar hub, that is.

Some cars had unique Nardi wheels as OEM fit and those can be terribly
expensive.

Has anyone ever seen an after-market steering wheel hub
that actually fits the telescopic column in a SIII properly?

Iā€™ve looked and looked and Iā€™ve never been able to find one
for sale anywhere.

I bought several months ago a beautiful polished fully-
wooden (steel-reinforced, of course) four-spoke Nardi wheel
along with a hub that was supposed to fit, yet it mounts
quite much the same as the one in the XJC photograph above.

An awful shame, because I was looking for months and months
before this one popped up. I suppose it doesnā€™t matter
anyhow since I still have not done a single thing to
getting it back on the road since removing the old engine.
Iā€™m just far too busy!

I did see one (not for sale and without any contact
addresses) a month or so ago in a Google image search
purely by accident and I havenā€™t been able to find it since.ā€“

Personally I prefer a Momo to a Nardi. When I purchased my Momo
Zebrano I also got the hub so it would fit on my 86 VDP properly.
It fit the hub alright, but I was not happy with the distance my
hands/fingers were from the ā€˜ā€˜stalksā€™ā€™ nor how close the wheel was to
me. The hub was very tall. So I found a broken Jaguar steering
wheel in a wrecking yard. I cut the center section out of this used
wheel (knowing for sure now that the spline count/size would be
correct)and drilled/tapped some new holes that would accept the
Momo 6 screws pattern. I re used the big nut to hold the modified
hub to the steering shaft. I cut and used the portion of the Momo
hub adaptor that the steering wheel itself attaches to. The horn
button attaches to this portion of the hub adaptor which, after
cutting, ended up being just the top of the adaptor, so now
the ''distance ā€˜ā€™ was back to the stock position - but this is where
the hub button connects to. Now the Momo wheel sits exactly where
the stock one used to be and the horn button is functional. I just
used the hub adaptor for the horn button feature. Just a little
surgery on an old hub - a bit of drilling and tapping. Perfect.ā€“

There are some pictures of the interior of my car showing the Momo
wheel installed in the photo albums section. I just posted some new
ones last week. IIRC I bought the adaptor on Ebay. It was about 5
inches tall and even with the tele steering wheel fully ā€˜ā€˜downā€™ā€™ it
was still kind of awkward. The old Jag hub from the wrecking yard
was cut down, (I just wanted the center section with the splines
and big nut) and is now the same width as the ā€˜ā€˜footprintā€™ā€™ (hate
that term)of the base of the Momo hub adaptor section. This piece
is now just the top of the adaptor that holds the horn button. It
is sandwiched in between the actual Momo steering wheel base and
the old Jag hub with the 6 sccrews passing through it. This allows
me to remove the ā€˜ā€˜heightā€™ā€™ of the adaptor and use only the top
section of the adaptor Soā€¦ each of the screws goes through the
steering wheel base, then through the modified Momo adaptor, and
into the screw holes I drilled and tapped into the old Jag hub.
Hope that helps. Its as solid as a stock factory unit. No wiggling
and is straight, flush and tight - no rocking or anything weird
like that.ā€“
