[xj] Paint codes

“John Valentine” <@John_Valentine>

Thanks to Charlie’s great website I have been able to identify and decipher
all of my trim codes, however my paint code is not listed. The code is JER
and is a very dark blue - identical to what other people have called
‘Westminster Blue’ which is listed as a 1987 colour. The car is a UK spec.
1984 SIII XJ6, if anyone has any ideas could they please let me know as a
respray is looking increasingly likely.

TIA

John: the 1984 dark blue was called Clarendon Blue; there was also cobalt
(mid blue) and sapphire (light blue).----- Original Message -----

Hmm, you might be right as that colour is not listed and neither is the
paint code for mine. I’m considering calling Jaguar themselves to try and
get the definitive answer.

I’ll let everyone know how it goes.
Thanks again to everyone for trying,

Hi everybody!
The advice I’ve received regarding getting a bit of paint for painting in
the engine bay is to go to car paint shop and have them mix up a small
amount. Sounds good to me. Two issues however, I know through Jaguar’s head
office in England (the VIN No. colour and interior trim list on Jag-Lovers
site doesn’t make sense with my VIN No, maybe because mine is a Daimler…?)
that the name of the colour my car is painted with is “Windsor Blue”. So how
do I find out what the colour code for Windsor Blue is? Or do I just tell
the paint shop car make, year and the colour name and they find out?
Secondly is there any particular brand of car paint I should look for in
order to get the best possible paint? As the car is up for a respray in a
couple months time I’d like to get the best possible paint.

Thanks.

The paint code is on a data plate located in the door jamb underneath the A
pillar. There are many quality brands of paint and most people have their
favorites. However, if you have already selected a shop that will
eventually do the respray, I would choose the brand and type of paint that
they would use on your car. You may even want to have them source it for
you.

Staffan, a good paint shop will either have books or a computer database
supplied by the manufacturer of the paint they provide. These will have
cross-references from various manufacturer information to that paint
company’s mixing codes. So give them the details you have, and they
should be able to find it, either by the official color name, or by the
factory paint code, which should be on a plate in the engine bay.

If you’ve already picked out a shop to do the respray, I’d check to see
what they use. If the respray is only a few months away, you might be
better off to have them order it all up now and provide you with the
small quantity you’ll need for the engine bay.===================================================

G’Day Saffan,
Windsor Blue (1986) is JEV 706 according to a chart I have published
by PPG Industries. Their code number is 16186. I’ll send you the chart off -
list.
