[xj-s] 1996 conv. top rubbing seattops

I recently purchased a 1996 2+2 cabriolet for my wife. The car was
garage kept and the convertible top seems to be in very good shape
but it gets stuck when being let down because its hitting the top
of the back seats just inboard of where the rear seat/shoulder belt
straps come out. Its actually tron the leather on the seat tops.
Does the convertible top frame likely need adjusting? Just
wondering if this is a common problem and what the most likely
remedy is before I take it in for what will likely be a costly
repair. Is there anything I can check out on my own first?
Thanks,
John in TN–

Do a search (top rubs seat)in the xjs archives and you will find
this problem addressed. Hopefully yours top will only require the
adjustment mentioned. Enjoy your new ride!–

John,

This is common for the convertible with rear seats.
As the two elastic straps that run from the rear
window to the header at the windshield loose their
strength they no longer hold the top edge of the rear
window clear of the seat before the top drops into the
stowage compartment.

No one has come up with a fix that I know of.— adv13809 jrholley@fedex.com wrote:

I had the same problem on my first 96 model. Not tearing the seat
but marking it. I put a couple of layers of strong clear stickey
tape on the spots that touched as a temp measure to prevent damage
till it could be adjusted. My new car (95 convertible) has a slight
mark but not doing damage, so it is probably common on all cars.

One reference on this list said you need to remove the two hinges
that guide the top into place and loosen the joints. I did that –
they were very stiff - and applied some WD40. My roof is better,
but I still push it back by hand when it nears the seat backs just
to be safe. I was able to fix the torn seats using some filler and
dye I bought from Leatherique.

This is the post I reffered to earlier: The short of it is. if you
lift the carpet under the back window
you will see 2 bolts with washers on each side. these bolts push
and pull the bracket that is attached to the back window frame. The
holes in the frame are adjustable. I simply loosened the bolts,
adjusted the bracket, retightened the bolts and … As they
say, ‘‘that was all she wrote’’. It now clears the back seat by
aproxmiately a 1/4 of an inch. The top is now also much tighter to
the windshield when bolted. Hope it also solves your problem.–

As I am new to the 94 version (going on 2 weeks!), is it normal
for the glass to slide down the backs of the rear seats eventually
wearing holes in them?

I had same problem when I bought my 95. rear seats were torn on the back. All it needed was additional pump fluid and it worked fine and cleared the back seats fine!
