[xj-s] 4.2L in a xjs

Does any one know if it is possible to put a 4.2L engine in a 83
xjs? I just picked up a xjs and the v12 was removed and the car
came with a 4.2L and I have’t seen any xjs with the 4.2L–

I guess it can be done; after all they share the front
subframe and the mountings can be swapped. You’ll probably
need a 3.6 or 4.0 hood/bonnet, since the XK engine will be
taller than the V12. Tranny mounting and propshaft will need
modifying too.
But why stick that old heap in there? Get a 4 litre
drivetrain off an XJ40 and stick that in instead; cheap,
much quicker/better mileage than the 4.2 and indestructible.
Check my pictures for something similar I did with my XJ6.
The purists wll tell you to go and find a V12 of course:)

cheers,–

The engine came with the car and I am going to put carbs on it do
something diffrent. the engine ran and only needs to be re-sealed.
I may do a re-ring if the cylinders look ok. But I want to know if
this has been done and are there any photos of a car that has been
done.–

Can’t wait to see the gas mileage from a carburetted XK engine in
an XJS. Better get your own strategic oil reserve in advance.–

I’d sell the 4.2 and put an AJ6 or AJ16 in it.–

Don’t know where you live, but putting a carbureted engine in where
an injected engine was won’t fly in nearly all states with
emissions inspections. They won’t accept going backward in
technology and emissions.–

I live in Mass any car older than 96 only gets a saftey check no
emissions test plus with running a 6 instead of a v12 will be less
emissions and I may put a 700r4 in it for the forth gear. I am
still not 100% sure if I will put the 4.2 in I may do a chevy v8 or
if I can find a 88 or 89 xj6 that runs ok but the body is shot for
short money I would do that. I would like to keep it all Jag if I
could.–

It’s any car from 1983 back doesn’t get an emissions check not 1996!

Yep, I purchased my 82 xjs with a lump v8 which was knackered , as an
interim measure while getting and building a V12 for it, I dropped in a 4.2
and auto from a series two, was carbed then changed to FI from a series
three.
Motor and Box bolted straight in and bolted to the origional mounts, Had to
change the bonnet and used the series two radiator (which also bolted
straight in.)
Handling remained the same as both engines are about the same weight, Ran
and performed very well !!
Fuel economy was good, My xjs had previously been fitted with a series three
diff so ratio allready suited the engine.
couple of weeks spent on and off with wiring , getting driveshaft made, ran
series two power steering pump with no problems and I had a very driveable
comfortable car…

The state changed the law back in October if the car does not have
a Obd2 connector they only get a saftey check they did away with
the running and idle test. The car I have is a 83 so it would not
be tested under the old law.–

That’s good! That inspection was always a ripoff IMO.
I left Mass for Sunny Tampa Bay a few years ago. Best thing I ever
