[xj-s] Access to rear calipers, spongy brakes need to go away! 86XJSC

Hi,
I was garaging the cat for last couple years (occasional
driving 1-2 a year). I took her out couple days ago and
noticed uber spongy brakes. Is there any ‘‘trick’’ to get
access to bleeding nipple ? Exhaust pipes are in the way it
seems…I have the Hanes manual somewhere, not sure if it
would be of any help (pictures?). Any suggestions ?

Thanks!–

My first recommendation would be to toss the Haynes book,
and get the green book, It’s been my experience on my xjs
that you have to be a contortionist, and double jointed to
get to the bleeders.

or move the exhaust out of the way. then install remote
bleeders I can get you the source if you like, or if you
don’t want the remote bleeders, then if this is a common
occurrence. These are available at classic jag and corvette
specialty parts stores, as well as speed shops.

you also might want to consider a set of ‘‘Speed Bleeders’’ a
special bleeder valve that has a check ball in it so you
can quickly bleed the brake by yourself.–

if its not a fault with the callipers you could try keeping
the brake pedal depressed for a couple of days with a
length of wood wedged against the seat and on the pedal,–

How would depressing of the pedal help ? Does anyone know
what is the size of bleeding nipple ? Would You recommend
using ‘‘S’’ shaped, bleeding wrench ? Also, is removal of
exhaust pipes 100% necessary ?
Thanks!

PS
Haynes manual seems really bad within brakes section…–

the air will gradually work its way back to the master
cylinder if pressure is kept on it, I never had to remove
the exhaust even before fitting remote bleeders. and I have
a big diam.system on it.
I think personally remote systems are not cost effective
unless you are perpetually bleeding your brakes,
the nipples are either 10mm or 11mm flat ring combination
spanner should fit ok–

Managed to get there, unfortunately no metric spanner : (
had to do it with 7/16, one bleeder (furthest) worked fine,
the one on driver side, rear, no donut. Brakes already feel
almost perfect. I will finish tomorrow with the front.
Found reason for rear-knocking - driver side, middle exhaust
knocking over rear assembly. Overall the exhaust pipe doesnt
snug well on the hanger I think.
Biggest finding is rear hub assembly that I found to be
cracked! (item nr 5 on the picture below).

Any idea how to refer (exacly) to find that part ?
Thanks!–

I installed a remote system because #1 I didn’t want brake
fluid all over my IRS,(theirs no way to wipe it all off)
that I rebuilt & painted a few years ago. We all know what
brake fluid does to paint! Next, there easy to bleed to say
the least. Yes their a PITA to install. In the process I
also noticed the small radius arm bush’s needed replaced.
This is also a good time to inspect the IRS.

when I’ve had spongy brakes, more often than not it was the master cylinder I discovered that the hard way when I couldn’t get the car slowed down fast enough, and ran into my ex-wife’s house; with the kids in the car. I just tapped the house, but still!!! I thought the kids were going to pee their pants they were laughing so hard. Me? Not so much.

Not that this is any help. But I keep a spare IRS kicking around, and tinker with it when I want to get away from the Wife; or need man cave time. that way when I need to do a brake job, or replace bushes, I’ve got one ready to go. Keep an eye on Craigslist they come up from time to time.

XKS unlimited also has a “bleeder” extender that makes bleeding a whole lot easier. Before I discovered the bleeder extender, I’d bleed them off the car, and cap the brake hose until I install it.

I have a " rear bleeder extender kit" I never used . I think they sell for about $100 new . If anyone is interested for $75+ shipping, get in touch . It won’t be available until next month though. I’m away so…
