[xj-s] AJ6 oil pressure problem

Hi guys,

I was wondering if someone can help me here with my 1992 XJS
4.0 automatic.

When the AJ6 engine is warm, the oil pressure gauge needle
flickers and shivers (though it always stays inside the
normal area) in ‘N’ as well as when the engine is idle in
‘D’. However, when on the throttle all seems to be ok with
good oil pressure. An oil change (15/40) didn’t help… I
have this car for 10 years now but this problem never occurred until now…

Many thanks,–

Did you change oil brands? Filter brands? Any additives?–

Hi JT, thanks for your comments, when the car got serviced a
year ago they did an oil change and put ‘Unipart’ oil 15/40,
which I topped up 6 months ago with a litre of Castrol
Magnatec 15/40. Do you suggest an oil and filter change? what
is the best oil for the AJ6 engine? I want this engine to
last, and I don’t require additional performance booster /
additives… what do you suggest me doing?
Thanks a lot,
AKM–

the oil presure sender could be iffy. Problem is that it’s
on the intake side of the engine; not easy to get to.
The oil pressure on our '95 convt drops to zero at idle, but
picks up as soon as the revs get over 1k. Sofar I’ve never
seen a faulty oil pump on these engines, even those with
500K or more on them, so I’m not bothered: if the thing
blows I’ll just replace the engine;)–
