[xj-s] Alt Not Charging] Solved

Before I started on Seans testing procedure I ran a wire from the alt lug directly
to the main buss at the firewall & it’s
charging. The gauge is just into the off charge are now but shows 13.30V at the
lighter socket and batt. So it appears that the wires from the alt to the starter
have some type of problem, they showed batt V when disconnected and
checked but for some reason the alt output isn’t making it’s way back through them
into the system.

The starter works well, I did replace the OE wires a couple of years back because
they had become very brittle & the insulation was cracking but not with a thinner
gauge wire. Perhaps thats the problem, I’ll be ordering some high temp
8 gauge wire today to replace that.

For now I’ll triple up some 14 gauge wire & run it to the buss directly.

thanks for the help.

So it appears that the wires from the alt to
the starter have some type of problem

Fortunately, one of the easiest problems to fix on the XJ-S. Just
run a NEW wire from the alt to the terminal on the firewall, running
along the RH wheel well. Make sure to use something substantial
enough to carry 100A continuously, and make sure to provide some room
for flexing as the engine bounces around on its rubber mounts.
Basically, abandon the OEM wires from alt to starter in place. If
you’re ever in there (RH exhaust manifold out, starter out, etc.)
then you could opt to replace the two undersized OEM leads with
something better.

Did that yesterday, tripled up some 14 ga wire for now but delcity
doesn’t sell 8 ga cross linked hi temp wire
largest ga they have is 10 ga.

What gauge wire should be used here ?

just installed the TT pipes & they are a bi%&* to hang.

Bob-

I used #4 gauge 105 degree welding cable when I rewired my
alternator/starter/right main terminal circuit. Good for 150+ amps. #6
gauge would be great, #8 is acceptable, #10 marginal.
Check with a marine store like West or E&B, they may have what you
need.

FWIW- Three #14’s are a wee bit better than one #10. Three #12’s would
work like one #8.

I might have a few feet of my #4 left over, and maybe a few terminals.
Contact me off list if you’re interested in it.
