[xj-s] ALTERNATOR CHOICE

I need to replace the alternator on my 85 XJS and I am asking about
my options, have mine rebuilt, buy rebuilt, or is there an
alternative such as Bosc
thanks, Bob–

Hi there,
I have been using a 95amp Bosch alternator on
on my 1974 Lump for the last 5 years without any problems.
It is a little different with the wiring at the back of the
alternator but nothing that any auto electrician can’t handle
in a few minutes. Good luck…Haroldus–

I bought a bracket and 94 amp altenator from John’s cars for my 85.
It was a very simple install and it works great.–

The alternator on my '96 VDP crapped out in November. I picked up a
direct replacement rebuild at Advance and so far so good.–

Whatever you do, make sure that the replacement alternator is at
least one-hundred amp–Lucas alternators of that vintage are anemic
at best putting out somewhere around 80 amps. Terrible. I know this
is not encouraging, BUT you may be able to find a real old-time
shop that can rewind your alternator and install the diode packs,
etc while at the same time uprating the alternators capability. I
lived with a Lucas alternator on my old XJ6 for many years swearing
at it the whole time.

The Bosch unit will not fit BUT if you have a clever mechanic who
you trust, I think a mount could be fabricated. I have seen it done
on other cars. Also, you might think of posting a request for any
info anyone might have about switching to a GM Delco alternator
(good, cheap and generally reliable) . . .that would include info
on how to get or make a new mount.

Good luck.
