[xj-s] Antifreeze Leak 1988 XJS

I have a 1988 XJS. Antifreeze is leaking I believe from the
radiator. If you are facing the car, the leak would be right
behind the rubber spoiler that is just a few inches from the ground
about in the center of the radiator. Also, one of the two fans was
not working at the time I checked the leaked. If you are seated in
the driver’s seat, it would be the fan to the left, although I read
something that said this fan may not be on all the
time. ‘‘Experience in a Book’’ recommends against any kind of leak
sealing substance. What are your recommendations?
John @jsalla1 Thanks.–

John,

Could be the water pump, but you’re going to have to do some checking to
localize the leak. You can try careful inspection when the system is hot,
but it’s a lot easier with a cooling system tester. If you don’t want to buy
one, take the car to a radiator shop that does.

Thanks Ed,
Do you know about how much a tester costs? Is it safe to fill the
radiator up with antifreeze and drive the car to a radiator shop
close to my home and stop and refilling the radiator along the way
if necessary?

Autozone and others have a tool lending program that includes the
cooling system tester. You leave a deposit for the price of the
tool and if you return the tool you get the deposit back. If you
like the tool and want to keep it, it is already paid for.–

About $75

Yes, but keep your eye on the gauge.
