[xj-s] Brake Accumulator Ball replacement

So, I got a replacement ball online for short $$$, went to get the old one
off, depressurized it by pumping the brakes 50+ times w/ the pump off. I
couldn’t budge the thing. The assembly is on a 3 point isolation mount so I
tried to clamp the aluminum casting w/ a big vise grip but still no movement
of the ball; the hex socket started to eat the head of the ball. My next
attempt will probably be to remove the unit entirely and clamp it in a vise.
My question is, how do I then bleed the High Pressure side of the line, the
“output” side of the ball?

Hi Mike,
When you pumped the brake peddle that bled the systems high
pressure. Using the vice grips on the aluminum housing or use a
block of wood to stop the housing from rotating. I used a strap
wrench around the circumference of the ball. Be sure and wrap a rag
around where the ball mates with the housing. You may have to add a
length to the wrench to get enough torque to loosen the ball. It
takes a lot of torque. Hope this helps.

I went lo tech on my 89. I wedged a rubber mallet under the
housing the ball is on so it would not twist. I too destroyed the
allen head slot on the ball. I got a pair of vicegrips, and
clamped it on the ‘‘nipple’’ on the und. I then took a three foot
section of 3 inch pvc pipe, shoved it over the handle of the vice
grips.

Next was the most critical part. I popped a beer, and while
drinking it, I slowly leaned away from the car holding the end of
the pvc cheatrer bar. The beer relaxed me enough to lean a little
harder, and finally it turned!

I then had to finish my beer (hey, it was still cold, the car could
wait), hand twisted the old accumulator off and replaced it with
the identical, but much cheaper GM unit.–
