[xj-s] fitting earlier 3.31 diff into 1990 convert

As dicussed in another thread that later cars like my 1990
convertible have the speedo-transducer in the diff. If I
want to fit an earlier 3.31 diff out of a 1977 XJ12 to the
car can I just bolt the later diff cover onto the earlier
diff or is the speedo transducer in a different part of the
diff or are there internal differences as well to produce
the signal from the transducer?–

Steve:

The 89+ cars all have speedo pickup on the diff. Simply changing
the diff cover won’t do it- there’s a reluctor ring on the carrier
assembly that must be fitted.

To move this reluctor ring to your 3.31 diff would require that the
carrier be removed and disassembled, and a bit of custom machining
done in order to fit the reluctor.

Other approaches: 1) fit your own reluctor ring at the propshaft-
diff interface (you’ll have to fuss around with mounting the
pickup). 2) fit a speedo pickup to the transmission and get one of
those cute boxes the hot rodders use to convert the pulse rates to
what your speedo needs.

Click on my phots link…I have already done in and it can be
done. Mike is correct. the carrier needs to be chocked up in a
lathe and the od of the 3.31 carrier machines down to accept the
relucter ring off of the 2.88 carrier. Rest assured, it can be
done, but its alot of work!–

So does the rear cover plate off of the late 2.88 diff
(dana?) bolt to the earlier 3.31 diff housing? I think the
1977 XJ12 diff I got probably is not a dana.–

As long as the case is a salisbury style, I believe it will. My
3.31 carrier was out of an 80’s XJ and it had the stamped steel
cover on it, My aluminum '89 finned cover bolted right up.
Salisbury diff (most common) drain plug in the bottom of the
carrier. Dana diff…no drain plug.–
