Rob,
Depends on the year model. On the early XJ-S it’s mounted on the right
intake manifold, at the front of the engine. On later models it’s in the
boot, right behind the spare tire.

It is located inside the front left wheel well behind a
plastic cover. You need to remove the wheel to get at it.–

On my sons 95 it was in the back of the left front wheel well as
said above… It is under a black plastic cover… Stock chevy fuel
filter, ( with flaired fittings at both ends)… Couple of open end
wrenches and a screwdriver or 1/4’’ drive socket set… One of the
easiest things to fix on the car, after taking off the wheel/tire.
Ours was totally plugged and made a whole new car out of it…–

I have an AllDATA subscription and for 1996 it says that
it is:
‘‘The Fuel Filter is located along the frame rail, next to
the fuel tank, and near the driver side rear wheel.’’

I am going to have to jack the car up and take a look for
myself. I already have the filter, just need to find it and
replace…–

Yeah, I read that alldata info too… Spent about 3 weeks looking
for it along the frame rail… Called my son a dummy when he told me
he couldn’t find it, then I had to call my self a dummy also…

Trust me, when you get tired of jacking up your car and sliding
around under it, take off the front wheel and replace it…–

Our 95 fuel filter was in the left front wheel well under a
plastic cover… Was very easy to change with the wheel off…

I would assume that sometime between 92 and 95 the filter was
moved from the frame rail to the front left wheel well…–

thanks to those who participated in this thread as it made
fuel filter change on my 96 xjs much easier … I remember
wondering what that plastic cover was hiding. BTW, the
slight hesitation is gone now!–

I am needing to change my fuel filter in my 1996 XJS 4.0L
too. I haven’t looked for it yet, but have heard that it
near the rear left frame rail. You are not saying that it
is in the front wheel well under a cover. I guess I’ll have
to look for myself on mine.–

My son was given this 95 XJS convertible from his mother ( my
EX)… She was tired of paying through the nose for repairs.

The car was running poorly, hard starting, and sometimes would
not start hot… Fuel filter was completely plugged up… Changing
it fixed all of the above problems… Just took a while to find
the darn thing… I believe in always checking the simple things
first…–

Turn your steering wheel all the way to the left… In the back
corner of your front left wheel well you should see a plastic cover
held on by 5 or 6 bolts… Your fuel filter should be underneath
this… As said above we took the wheel/tire off and it was about
as simple a fix as can be done to a car…–
