[xj-s] gasoline + 10% ethanol= gasohol(E10)

Hi
I have been running 1976 XJ-S v12 with 95octane with no problem.
However, in Thailand they are going to replace this petrol with
GASOHOL. Basically, the same gas with additional of ethanol at 10 %.

The claim is this mixture will produce Octane 98 at the cheaper
price.

My concern is not the increased octane nor price but the effect of
alchohol to fuel line, filter, injector seal, fuel pump and so on.

Does any of you have experience on this new fuel?
Please kindly share your thought.

Thank you very much.

I California has been using 5.7% ethanol in the fuel since phase-out
of MTBE,
with plans to go to 10% or even higher. Actually, we may be closer to
10% even now
since the report I just found on Google was dated March 2005. I have
been using the middle
grade (89 octane?) with no known problems.

I normally run Premium fuel (Aussie level) of 95 to 96 RON in a 5.3
Fuel Injected XJ-S,

I have the advance on my car set to just below pinging on the
normal fuel.

Early this year I tried what was sold at the pump as Premium with
10% Ethanol (Supposed to be 96-98 RON) it ran like a hairy mountain
goat, mostly OK on low throttle on the flat, but point it at a hill
or floor it and it had BAD pinging.

So I can only assume there is more to the story than Octane rating.–

In the Chicago, IL area, all of the pumps sell 90/10 gas/ethanol.
Have never had a problem with it.–

I’ve been running 90/10 for 2 years now. Seems OK to me.

I heard recently that one state, I think it was Minnesota, requires
all gasoline sold in the state to be at least 10% ethanol. It had
better work OK! I dunno what you’d do if your car couldn’t use
ethanol for some reason.

I have a couple of small engines – lawn mower, chain saw – that
specify that ethanol should not be used. I dunno why not, but I
suspect some of the plastic or rubbers used in the fuel tank or
pickup don’t get along with ethanol.

We’ve had a 10 percent ethanol mandate in the state for many, many
years and despite all the predictions of doom and gloom our cars
run just fine–including my 24 year-old jaguar…and my lawnmower
and my boat…its 10 percent less oil we import from the middle
east. That’s fine by me.

Due to the decreased fuel mileage with Ethanol, it is actually less
than ‘‘10% less oil imported’’–

I was going through some Service Bulletins the other
day and one states the XJS is good for 10% ethanol
from '81.
