[xj-s] How to Replace a Cylinder Block Core Plug

I have a 96 XJS with the AJ16 engine.

The ‘‘cylinder block core plug’’, part number C168623 is
leaking by my exhaust manifold. Not a lot, but enough to
annoy me.

Can anyone tell me how I can replace it?

I understand Dorman makes a replacement, 555-017 that is
way cheaper than the $10 this part seems to fetch.

Has anyone dome this already?–

On this engine and car, no !

On other critters, out and in situ, yes.

Room for the BFH is essential. Room for prying or a slide
hammer is essential.

Next is a clean block for the new plug to seat properly,
and as such seal.

Then, the room thing again, to drive the plug home. More
BFH and a suitable driver.

Or, a tad of a block sealer, the crystal type.

Way back when, a similar issue occurred on my 58 Pontiac
Star Chief. a small plug at the rear of the head on the
left bank. Should’ve removed the head. Not all that bad a
task.

But, nope, I drilled a series of small holes as a method of
making an access opening. Worked, a slide hammer pulled
out the one with the hole. Enough room to drive hoe an new
plug. A sheet metal patch secured the hole and all was
well, til the next issue…

Thanks. Do I need to drain anything before performing this feat?–

Oh, yes.

The coolant from the engine/radiator.

Man, that is strange. I expected you to say that, but the whole
reason I think the plug is leaking is because it appears that I see
oil leaking out of it.

Must be collecting from somewhere else…–

I have heard that the AJ16 motor can develop a leak from the head
gasket. I would recommend cleaning this area very well and
watching to make sure the oil is not coming from another source
and pooling in this area.

When I say I have heard I should clarify that someone I know with
a 1996 X300 with the AJ16 motor with aprox. 115K miles found out
their head gasket was leaking externally. They were told by the
Jag specialty shop that found this that they had seen this
before. This info was a surprise to me as I had not heard that
but just wanted you to be aware as a possibility.–
