[xj-s] Installing transmission cooler

I was wondering what is the easiest way to put a transmission
cooler in the xjs? I want to put one in front of the radiator
and was wondering if the stock lines can be used or would it
be easier to just run new lines?–

If you put it in front of the ac condenser, your existing lines are too short and in any event too old. Depending on the year, they may also have screw on fittings. New lines are required if you do install an external transmission cooler.

My car got one because the existing cooler was allowing antifreeze into the transmission. But if it wasn’t leaking, I’m not sure I’d have installed an external one. Put a red hot piece of iron into boiling water, and let another one cool in the air… Which drops temp faster? Yes the one in the air could eventually get cooler, but I think I would have preferred the water to cool it down more degrees sooner. Plus if its in the radiator you get some thermostatic effect. Something like that, I have no evidence.

John:

I’m not sure I agree with your boiling water vs air as to cool down
time.

OTH, I am not sure I want to open can of worms either. The air
could range from frigid to cooking hot. Sub zero to 100 + F! The
coolant max’s at about 212 F.

The trans could heat the engine coolant or the engine coolant could
heat the trans.

Although my cars are not so plumbed, the separate engine and trans
cooling systems appeal to me. Not truly separate albeit!!

Dan,

I am a little lost in the string, but what I beleive to be the case
is that you are getting coolant in your trans fluid (and no doubt
vice-versa). This obviously indicates an internal failure fo your
radiator. I would submit that you would be better off simply
replacing your radiator, which is surely not working well now, and
will most definately fail at the least convenient time for you in
the near future. I recently perfomed a complete update of my
cooling system and while it was not without a few challenges, it
was not rocket science either. A last thought, don’t cook your
engine! Good luck
