[xj-s] Missing 3rd gear?

I wonder if anyone reconizes this problem…

My 1989 XJ-S with the GM400 3 speed tranny is now a 2 speed?
For some reason 3rd gear will not engage?
Any ideas?

Yes, I have …
I use to ha ve this problem I paid a lot for it (2000$) then it come
back and discover it was not a big problem.

You have to check this:
When you put 3rd you have the impression to be in 2 and when the speed
60km/h and you let the speed control down it is like if you use Neutral
?
In this case
Try to drive to the speed of 120km/h with the 3rd (ok it’s terrible
noise because your engine use the 2d), then the 3rd switch on ??.
In this case it could mean that you have some stupid vacuum problem. For
my car it was the fact that the hose of vacuum pass to close of the head
engine. So by warm weather no 3rd gear.
The hoses for vacuum is close to the firewall to the left side
(passanger’s side in US) !

Ok it’s only apron description. In my case I 'm not certain that it will
not come again !

Of course you can go to garage like I did but it could take a lot of $
for revision of the inside of the gearbox but the problem will come
again and perhaps some other components of the box will be weaker
because they need to touch it so you will have other problem…it happens
to me.

bonne chance !
