[xj-s] New Keys

What is the process to acquire additional ignition and door keys?
My '90 XJ-S was previously owned and I have one set only!
Thanks

Unless there’s something special about keys for a '90 which I am unaware of
(entirely possible), just visit your local locksmith. I’ve never had any
problems getting duplicates for my '87 and '88 Jags…One time they used
blanks intended for a Mazda.

Our old 80s models have what look like fairly normal keys. In 90, Jag went
to this toothpick looking thing with ridges marked on it. It’s more of a
stick than a usual-looking key. I have one for my Sovereign and noticed all
the newer ones are still using them.

I suppose it’s possible a locksmith would have something like this … but
it doesn’t look to be something they can just grind on a wheel like a
regular key.

I had the same situation as you, PO only had 1 set of keys for my
90 XJS. I found a set of key blanks on the internet, I think from
XK’s Unlimited, for less than $20. Local locksmith duped door key
for a buck. The ignition key was a bit more demanding but they had
the equipment to do the job. It took the technician about a half
hour to grind the ‘‘stick’’ ignition key. They didn’t know how to
charge since I provided the blank, so there was NO CHARGE. How
about that sports fans? I’m sure that in your metro area somewhere
there is a locksmith that can do the job for you cheaper than the
dealer. Although I have heard that some XJS owners have paid up to
$125 for a dupe ignition key. BTW the locksmith did have the blanks
for both the door and ignition keys.–

And in fact, that car likely uses the infamous Tibbe key, which is basically
a roughly 1/8-inch rod with ramped bumps along its length.

If you have this key (also used on XJ40s), a Jaguar dealer is going to be
the only option for most folks. Most dealers don’t cut these keys in house,
but rather order them from Jaguar by key code. Yes, they’re expensive but
there’s not an options if one needs one. Somewhere there may be a locksmith
that can cut Tibbe keys but I’ve never found one.

I was able to buy one of those newer keys on eBay. My local locksmith could
cut the fuel filler cap key, but not the main key. I had to bring it to my
local Jag dealer. I almost fainted when he told me the price…FREE! They
don’t charge to cut the keys. They only charge for the key itself. Since I
already had the key, they didn’t charge me.

Also, don’t forget the keyfob remote!

You might go to the archives on this one. We were talking about this issue
about a year ago as I recall. There was a guy that was listed who you could
order your keys from for about 20.00 ea. And someone offered up the cutting
code for the cuts out of the round key…Good Hunting… Jerry

I purchased mine from the jag graveyard. They alays have a ton of key
blanks for sale on e-bay. Then take them to your local hardware store and
have them cut using your exsisting keys as the pattern.–

I bought replacement keys from Cole European in Walnut Creek. It cost about
$50.00, but it was an exact duplicate. Since your’e in Oakland, you might
want to visit the Jag dealer in San Francisco on Van Ness street

I bought a set of blanks off ebay for ~$8, key company from Australia. Took
about a week, and shipping was an additional $4.50 IIRC. Cost me $4 to have
them cut at the local hardware store. They don’t have the Jaguar logo on
them, the ignition one is black…for under $20…

In reply to a message from Ross Kuhns sent Wed 30 Apr 2003:

After putting the car in the garage due to rain and the incoming
hail storm, I looked at my keys. Both the ignition and the door
keys are not the originals. The ignition is an Ilco FT6R. The
door key is by Taylor, X55 Davis lock. Both sets of keys are like
this. At my local hardware store I am sure I can get these
duplicated for about 1 USD.

My trunk lock does not work, but that is a different story.
