[xj-s] New XJS 2 Problems/Qs Top Engine plunger and interior leak

Hello to all fellow Jag enthusiasts. I have recently
purchased a 1985 v12 N.American spec XJS.

I have 2 issues that I hope someone can help me with. On the
top center of the engine I have a Large Plunger type item
with a cover over it. It seems to not be connected to
whatever it is supposed to be connected to via a mechanical
cable dead center facing the passenger compartment. I seems
broken off and I would really appreciate any insight as to
what this is, it’s function, as well as how I might go about
repairing it.

My second and most annoying problem is the water leak. What
happened is that I went into a top down car wash (in a
hurry) and everything seemed fine, however about 15-20
seconds in I heard what sounded like trickleing water. It
started coming in on the passenger side foot area like a
small waterfall and I luckily had a towel to throw under it.
Then about 5-10 seconds later a gush of water spilled onto
the towel and the wash ended. After the wash small amounts
of water kept spilling where it had before while driving.
Luckily no electronics were harmed. If someone has had this
problem or knows where to look any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any information and help.–

Justin,

First item is the ‘‘cruise control bellows’’, lots of info in ‘‘THE
BOOK’’, by Kirby Palm, available to download from this website.

Second issue sounds horribly like the scuttle vent drains are
blocked BADLY. They are accessable thru the opening that is the
wiper motor grille dead centre in front of the windscreen. Again,
lots of info on this in Kirby’s book.

That book by Kirby is a wealth of information for anyone with an XJ-
S, and well worth the time to download and read.

Ok. I have discovered what the plunger is. I read through
‘‘The Book’’ and am guessing that it is related to the cruise
and that it is probably the reason why it doesn’t work.

However, I am still in need of input on the leak source and
how to fix it as my car needs to be washed yesterday and it
is going to become snowy/rainy around here soon.

Thank you–

I guess that I was posting while my questions were being
answered.

Thank you Grant Francis for your reply. I greatly appreciate it.

I am going to deal with this blockage and hope it’s that easy.

As for the cruise, I guess that I will deal with it when I
rebuild my injector harness in the days to come.

Best,

Vent cover removed, windshield wiper assembly removed,
Paper? Wiper motor cover fell apart, Vacuumed area clear of
all particles, Pulled hoses to wheelwells and cleaned/poked
them clear, Reassembled. I made this up as I went along, It
seemed really straightforward after I was done but it didn’t
when I started. Took maybe 3 hours but that included new
hood struts. I just came back from the wash and wax place
and there are no leaks. My hood stays up now too, that’s
awesome.–
