[xj-s] Question on '93 XJS airbag light... should it come on?

Here’s my question: When you start the car, is the air bag
light supposed to come on?

Here’s the background. I have '93 XJS convertible w/ the
4.0 liter inline six. I live in Virginia (USA) and need to
have the car inspected. The local garage wants to fail the
car because the air bag light doesn’t come on when the start
the car. It’s never come on since I’ve owned the car (1
year).

Is it supposed to come on? If not, can anyone provide me
with information on the ‘‘normal’’ operation so that I can
show the local mechanics that the car is working fine.

I’d appreciate any help and/or advice.

     Sincerely,

          -Phil--

PJB3, read your question. my answer is what light. Went through all
three of my owners manuals jx-s, xj-s supplement, and xjr-s
suppliment all are '93 manuals. if there is a light none of them
mention it. all the lights at the lip of the dash are as follows l
to r front fog lamp, bulb failure, spotr moderear guard lamp, left
turn signal, high beam, anti lock braking system, low water
level, brake system fault, low oil preesre parking brake on, low
fuel light, check engine light, ignition light, seat belt light, rt
turn signal, trailer, auto transmission failure xjs4.0 w/at,
exhaust temp(not used) and low windscreen washer fluid level. I
even looked in the air bag section and the only thing it said was
to replace the bag at the year stated on the label under the mirror
in the glove box. hope this helps out. awa 93xjr-s 99xk-8 conv–

Thank you so much for your detailed answer.
Not having my car (the garage has it)… I didn’t have
access to the manuals or the dash to look for myself.

What light? is the perfect answer. I spoke to the garage
and it’s all cleared up now. It passed inspection (yeah!).

I know that the garage is reputable… they’re honest they
just weren’t familar with the car.

Thanks again, and happy motoring!

PJB3

The reason there is no light is because there are no
electrics for the air bag. It’s mechanical.

Cool.

The more I get the know my Jag, the more I like it. It’s
quirky (witness the bulb-failure sensors and how pressing
the brake pedal with the parking break on makes it light
up), but that’s part of the fun.

Thanks for the information.
